On the list of upgrades found for our coach "Harry", there is an item called "Vacuum Brake Lock". I assume it is some type of vacuum assisted parking brake, but I cannot find another GMC that has one, or any information about it. Does anyone have experience with this system? I think the following pictures show the system.

1st picture you have is the cruise control tranducer.(located just to passenger side of distributor). there is one item that is coming off of it, that I am not sure I recognize. it usually has speedometer cable in, and speedometer cable out, I only see one cable.

as for the brake lock:

the clean looking etched switch plate you have(the one that says "read warnings and operating instructions") , is just like the one I have disconnected on my coach. I do not think it is related to your "vacuum brake lock". the plate one, like on my coach, is electrical solenoid on the rear feeding brake line. Press the brake, hit the switch, and the electric soleniod holds the rear brake pressure. You release the switch and the solenoid should open up. I have a mechanical one on my vw dune buggy, that is similar, except I push a mechanical button right on the brake line on that that one.

it looks to me that device by your steering shaft, would be that vacuum brake lock device. I am guessing maybe the same as the electric version, except it used a vacuum solenoid? but that is my guess.

I personally have disconnected that brake lock on my GMC, it was old, not used, and I just could not trust it because I did not know the history of the device. I would think you may want to do the same.

Make that ...(front or REAR). :-(
... (IF there really is one) to the original MC and to one of the brake
systems (front or read).

Russell,

You will probably never see one of these on another GMC.
That is a system that was installed on large GM trucks (not pick-up weight). The last time I saw one was on a late 60s rental box truck.
The one that I did see had nothing connected to the cruise servo as it did not have cruise.
I do know that it included a parking brake feature as there was a large warning to not try to move the vehicle without vacuum on the system. I think I recall that same plate that you show, but this was 50+/- years ago.

Google "remote slave vacuum master cylinder" and you might learn more.

I suggest that you carefully document what you have there because your chance of finding anybody that knows anything about it diminishes by the day. I can also promise the repair parts will be scarce.

Thank you Jon, Ken, Matt, and JimK.

I'm still a newbie and have a lot to learn about our GMC.

This forum is definitely a good place to get answers.

Thanks again.

Jim K at Applied GMC sells one that looks a lot like this, and about the same price.

Looks like good quality,, but looked like a fair amount of install time (and we were VERY preoccupied with other jobs
at the time), so we didn’t go with this one...
But now that the dust has settled, i’m curious about the manual Brake Lock options out there
(not electric, and quite a bit less expensive?).
I’d imagine that the lines for one of those units could be plumbed right up through the hole
where the old parking brake was mounted?
But one main question would be how securely would the unit need to be mounted?
For example, how much finger/hand pressure is required to lock and unlock?
We wouldn’t want to be busting brake lines while twisting the thing, hmmmm…

cheers
Greg / Los Angeles / y Tijuana tambien :)
