I've got the 6Kw pulled from my 1975 Avion so that I can clean and refurbish the genset compartment.

I'll be doing all the normal service items, but wonder what if any procedures/upgrades/modifications are best done with the unit pulled.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Dave

I'd check every wire from the Molex<tm> connector to its termination, looking for scuff marks or broken insulation and replace any that are suspect. Then either sleeve them or ty-rap<tm> them off places where they're abrading when the set runs.

You might consider changing your generator to allow propane operation. I've attached a link Jerry Work's presentation to the GMC Western States in Coos Bay last month with lots of reasons why this makes sense. I've converted mine using his instructions and the kit he designed with US Carb and it works well.

Disassemble and clean the drawer slides.
Use a dry lubricant.

You might want to do the Petronix ignition upgrade...though that can be done with the genset in place. JWID

Since no one else mentioned it, you might want to consider pulling the heads and doing a decarb. Its pretty straightforward

There are few things one should consider:
The primer switch mounted inside to pre prime the carb so one does not need
to crank but short burst.
The cooling air deflector to keep hot are from gen will not be pulled in to
cool. Also keep the air from blowing directly and creating dust which will
be brought up and damage the armature and shorting the life of the air
filter.
Rubber seal around the Oil filter so there will be more air circulating
through the cooling fins.
Improve the weak ignition system with a Pertronix system that will wake up
the uit. You need to remove the cover and place a magnet on the flywheel
for signalling.
Also there is a more expensive MSD ignition system with multiple spark that
will also wake up the unit, but does not require any disassembly.
Also tighten the Oil filter adapter.
Replace the starter bracket with the steel bracket as they do break.
Also replace the origional bridge rectifier with a newer one as they are
bullet proof.
