A word of advice....when looking at a gmc to buy, always check for frame rust first....if frame rust is bad the gmc may be unable to acquire a safety certificate...unless repaired first for big bucks.....frame rust can occur a lot in Canada on 40+ tr vechicle....particularly those that have lived in eastern Canada....brian 77 ele near winnipeg

Hi Ken. I have never been one to turn away from a decent drive (or flight as the case may be). Sorry to hear about your buddy in kamloops, but Yes,
seeing it from the ground around here is nice. Flying over-head is a great vista, but the mountains are nice to ride through. Have never done the
ride to Lytton - I have 400 Burgman scooter that I will likely take out on more trips next summer and may head up that way - need to find a way to
transport it on whatever GMC I end up adopting - either as a toad on a small utility trailer or with a dolly wheel to keep it from making the GMC pull
a wheelie!

If you know of a good coach I am most definitely open to hearing about it! A 2-3 day run back would be the perfect shake-down cruise!

Thanks for thinking of me, and for all of the help - you guys are awesome!

Deb

Deb,

I live in Calgary, Alberta and recently this year purchased a 1977 Kingsley 26 foot (Elvis) that is mostly original. I have been monitoring new listings since and not much has come up. I bought mine on Kijiji in Lethbridge. Other than the generator board being bad, It was basically a ready to roll unit. Most of the units coming up for sale have been on Kijiji in Alberta with a couple in B.C. There was a 23 foot Birchaven in B.C. about 2 months ago for $19,000 can that looked not bad. There was also a nice 26 foot Eleganza? I believe in Edmonton for $20k that looked very nice too, in fact it was on the GMC Motorhome for sale site on Facebook too. Also, there is/was a 26 footer in High River for $15k on Kijiji that looked ok too. I have not personally looked at any of the mentioned ones in person. After July the number of offerings in western Canada really dried up.

I too want to put a scooter on my back bumper and I purchased a 500# steel rack from princess auto that was on sale for $100, regular $150. The steel rack apparently weighs about the same as the aluminum one they offer for a 400# rating, if you believe there specs. Anyways, Elvis is now in storage so I’m onto my other projects. Let me know if I can assist you in your GMC hunting. My cell is 403-808-8267.

Thanks Brian - I have seen that caveat a couple of times. I suppose that with the rest of it aluminum & fibreglass, there has to be somewhere we have to check for rust. Otherwise what's a Canadian to do on a vehicle hunt?! Eh? Wink I'm originally from S . Ontario - big time rust there. Had a car once that the only thing holding the bottom of door together was the paint!

"Thank you, thank you very much" (Sorry, had to!) Seriously Neil, I appreciate the help. I'v actually had my eye on that 76 in High River. The seller has sent me a tonne of video and pix that he has uploaded into his Dropbox. It's an interesting vehicle. Has had some work done on it - example, the digital dash & an engine rebuild both done 23K ago, new range, oven & fridge, Generac generator with remote start from inside (and it works - demo'd on the video) and other items I can't recall off the top of my head. Still very much on the list. But, I have been convinced to slow down a bit. Hard to do, but I'm trying Smile If I decide to consider more seriously, maybe I could give you a shout.

Based on my experience, and that of at least two other GMCers whom I know,
if that's a Generac 36, discount it -- plan to replace it. The fact that
it's no longer sold probably reflects similar experience for others.

Frame itself might be "affordable" (is $2,000 USD affordable?). Installed, material and labor will be more than the GMC itself is worth.

IIRC, a precut and drilled "kit" used to be on the order of $2,000 USD. Dan Stuckey was (is?) in Canada, sold the "kits" and installed them. Labor was somewhere between 80 and 120 hours. If he charges the standard $80 - $100 per hour, it is going to be upwards of $3200 for labor. Add the $2,000 for the frame itself, and your in for over $5,000. Add to that the cost of getting your GMC to and from Dan and...

Generally, if one has a rusted frame, it is a parts unit. Not worth repairing. If you are not looking for a parts donor, walk away.

Brian makes a good point about the 2013 flood in High River, it’s worth checking into that more. Also, I forgot to mention there was a recent 26 footer on Kijiji in green with green and more green here in Calgary. Obviously, an original beauty but the owner tells me tonight that it just sold. No mention of price however. I know all about the diving in too fast as it’s almost impossible not to buy right away but try and resist and look at lots. As mentioned before, there are a lot more choices in the USA so don’t discount that even with the dollar being what it is. Good hunting!

I was thinking about the flood - who knows were this one was parked during that! And I did check into the green with green on green Smile It was going to need tires & brakes & "bushings" within the year. Had rebuilt tranny apparently but he was swearing that it was 37,000 original miles. May have been. But For what I saw, and what I knew up front it was going to need before next season was out, he wanted too much (more than I was willing to pay especially since I know nothing and hadn't seen it at all) wanted $8800 - and I have the '73 in ON that I was looking at for $3000 more with a lot more upgrades and updates. Plus I really couldn't get over the green on green on green with green shag carpet and green trim upholstery. Couldn't face it. And he got back to me tonight too about the sale. Hope it goes well for whoever; I suspect that it could have been more than I would have wanted to take on this early in my "career" anyway.

I am starting to enjoy the hunt and the research. Getting to know a bit more about what's good, what isn't, what I could live with, what layout I might prefer (side wet-bath and the rear gaucho arrangement I think will suit me best the 26-3 I think it is). I will be doing some investigating on how much it would take to make changes to the inside if the unit showed up with all of the mechanicals and accessories in great nick, but the interior wasn't going to be what I really wanted. And then there's the perennial generator question - good, bad or ugly (or missing altogether!).

Lots to think about and even more to learn.

That High River flood ...there was a beaytiful coach in high river that had a total renovation. It sat through the flood. I believe it was auctioned off although I am not sure if I am remembering correctly...there were pics of it on this forum. Someone here will know about this. There was something very negative about this beautiful coach. Brian 77ele

I was thinking about the flood - who knows were this one was parked during that! And I did check into the green with green on green :) It was going
to need tires & brakes & "bushings" within the year. Had rebuilt tranny apparently but he was swearing that it was 37,000 original miles. May have
been. But For what I saw, and what I knew up front it was going to need before next season was out, he wanted too much (more than I was willing to
pay especially since I know nothing and hadn't seen it at all) wanted $8800 - and I have the '73 in ON that I was looking at for $3000 more with a lot
more upgrades and updates. Plus I really couldn't get over the green on green on green with green shag carpet and green trim upholstery. Couldn't
face it. And he got back to me tonight too about the sale. Hope it goes well for whoever; I suspect that it could have been more than I would have
wanted to take on this early in my "career" anyway.

I am starting to enjoy the hunt and the research. Getting to know a bit more about what's good, what isn't, what I could live with, what layout I
might prefer (side wet-bath and the rear gaucho arrangement I think will suit me best the 26-3 I think it is). I will be doing some investigating on
how much it would take to make changes to the inside if the unit showed up with all of the mechanicals and accessories in great nick, but the interior
wasn't going to be what I really wanted. And then there's the perennial generator question - good, bad or ugly (or missing altogether!).

Lots to think about and even more to learn.

It looks like I should have patented mine.

I had a little less than $50.00 in mine. Most of it was steel scraps that I picked up at a local steel and aluminum fabricator. The owner of the steel company has 2 GMC's but I have never met him.

Hi Deb

I bought mine in St. Louis after flying to Texas and Florida to look at coaches. That exercise saved me a lot more than the 1800 I spent on airfare. As for importing the coach in to Canada it was an easy process. Get the best you can afford that will let you use it right away cosmetics can be cleaned up while you are using it. Mine still has ugly paint from when it was painted by the PO in 1995 I bought it in 2002 and have put 140000 miles on it since

Happy to hear that. I am not "house proud" (my mother could have told you that!) - as long as it works and isn't falling apart or off the wall, I am OK with interior cosmetics (except for that green on green on green that was in Calgary - although I could have lived with it) - I can paint and cover, and drill & build things if need be (hell - I can even sew if desperate Smile ) But I don't want to stretch my budget right to it's limit to purchase, and then have no buffer. The pension won't be huge so I need to keep something of a nest egg (for repairs more likely!). I really need to keep this under $15K Cdn (closer to $12K would be better). I want to enjoy it, not spend every minute wondering if I made a good decision and worrying about $. I spent too many years living on the edge of my budget, with absolutely no money to spare to want to do that into my retirement too.

If nothing has come to me by summer, I will be able to perhaps do some hopping around by plane after lining up some possibles. Can't do anything till spring though - students keep you tied down September to April.

There was a super modified GMC (~ $200,000 or more) that got

caught in a flood in Calgary a couple or three years back.

It was a Jim Bounds project that was finished just before the

previous Dothan convention and displayed there.

I have never heard if it had been repaired/restored.

"Thank you, thank you very much" (Sorry, had to!) Seriously Neil, I appreciate the help. I'v actually had my eye on that 76 in High River. The
seller has sent me a tonne of video and pix that he has uploaded into his Dropbox. It's an interesting vehicle. Has had some work done on it -
example, the digital dash & an engine rebuild both done 23K ago, new range, oven & fridge, Generac generator with remote start from inside (and it
works - demo'd on the video) and other items I can't recall off the top of my head. Still very much on the list. But, I have been convinced to slow
down a bit. Hard to do, but I'm trying :) If I decide to consider more seriously, maybe I could give you a shout.
