Hello all. I'm Jim Bell @ 24084. I bought Lurch in 2009 and it is slowly becoming usable. If I'd known what I know now, I wouldn't have bought Lurch. Hindsight is 20/20. It had a repaint and interior redo in the 90's, but the mechs were a mess. The Coop did superior work for me (Three weeklong visits. Jim Bounds went out of his way to help. This is before the Coop moved to their new digs) At the Ohio rally, Alex Ferrera noted that the steering gear alignment was correct, but noted feathering on some of the tires. He also suggested cleaning the filter screen going to the wiper motor. That made a difference, but...

I can do oil changes and simple maintenance, not a wheel alignment on a 6 wheeled coach.

Here is my issue. Alex noted feathering on some tires. That indicates an alignment problem. I have to have a hand on the wheel at ALL times and watch the road.

Who can make my coach steer right? Going to FL takes two days down and two days back. Is there anyone closer?

Thanks in advance, I am, Jim Bell.

You should have made it easier on folks and said you are in Dublin, VA. Many people here won't expend the effort to resolve the number you posted, even the ones that recognize it as a zip code. Oddly, they will expend the same effort to post a reply asking where you are.

You need to tell us if it is the front or rear tires that are wearing unevenly. And which side(s). If just the front tires, start by getting any old shadetree mechanic to adjust the toe-in to 0 (zero) and see what that does. The rears are another animal. The only professional GMC mechanic that I am aware of other than CA and FL would be Tom Hampton in Marysville, OH. About 325 miles from Dublin, VA.

To 'A Hamilto'. Just a btw. I grew up near you in Huntsville, AL. 1965-1970. Dad worked for GE during NASAs great age. Apollo, Mercury and even the beginnings of the space shuttle. He was an amazing man. Thanks again for your response!

Jim,

I guess that you are also not aware that there are some significant differences between years, models and upfitters. Ego that is important information to have in the signature line (sigfile).

Where you are is also nice because there may be someone that would be willing to assist that does know he is in striking range.

A whole real name is nice to, because you will meet others form this group and it is very handy to know who you are and this can save a lot of confusion.

Jim,

It is better, but it would be better still if you added Model (Sequoia 26 i.e.). There were four GMC models in 73&4, and they came in 23' and 26. The only reason for the model is so we know it was a GMC (Gemini) interior (I believe there were no Transmodes in those years), but the differences between 23 and 26 are really important.

If the discussion involves freshwater tanks there is a significant difference in some floor plans. Any plan with a rear gaucho bed will have the water tank located in the middle of the coach running side to side. This floor plan only existed on the 73-74 models. Not sure where the tank is located on the permanent rear bed models.

OK! but what do these questions about my TZE have to do about my request for "Who can fix my coach"?

I've gotten two good referrals. And I thank you. One is Glen Fry in PA and the other is Grandview Motorhome in OH.

I think the Coop is great and Alex Ferrera clued me in to some steering issues I have just by running his hand over the tires and looking for feathering. And cleaning the filter to the wiper motor did help.

Asking about my coach model is irrelevant. 23 or 26. Sequoia/Palm Beach? Whatever. I've taken my coach to several mechanics and only the GMC motorhome people get it

The local techs have been a mixed bag. I can get a state inspection sticker. Actually the first place I took it put a Virginia rejection sticker on it and REFUSED to work on it.

It's KEN Frye, not Glen.

You might also talk to Barry Owen in Lexington, NC. He should be in the

Jim,

In VA, get the coach an antique license plate for $50 (one time) and avoid the inspection racket forever.

Thanks to all of you for your help. Ken Frye in Quakertown PA did a great job and I recommend him to anyone for anything. If he can do it, he'll do it. If he can't do it, he'll tell you. My coach steers great now.
