Sitting at a fairground parking lot only 8 miles from home with yet another
train problem. Is there suppose to be something that fits in a hole below
the governor? And if so, how badly may I wrecked the train? The first 6
miles were basically just coasting down the mountain.

The large round hole has a loosely fitting cover that i very easy to remove. I'm suprised they even stay on.
The trans works fine without it
Is that your only problem?

No, within the last half mile of travel, I was losing a stream of fluid and
motivation ability. Just made it into the parking lot, with a train fluid
undercarriage and little puddle of fluid. Had been having some shifting
problems just before this.
So if this cover isn't the problem any guesses what it could be?

Faye, if you are losing fluid on the governor side of the transmission, and
it is not the speedometer drive, then it could be the cooler lines and
fittings that exit the transmission in that area. If you lost a lot of
fluid, damage can be significant.

Faye, I am looking at the manual in the transmission section page 7-33,
figure 21. There is a soft plug directly under the governor that is secured
by a part called the Speedometer driven gear retainer. It is secured by a
hex head bolt. If that bolt is missing, the soft plug can come out, and
fluid loss will happen. Same result. Bad stuff. That is the only other
thing in the area to leak like you describe. If you have your old tranny,
Rob those parts, install them on your coach, add fluid and see what happens.

Turns out the Speedo bullet was missing. Rob one from the train that failed
last year, added fluid and seemed good to go. Few blocks later having
different problems. Trip on hold- will see what happens in the morning.

Hoping to have mechanic friend drive it in the morning to tell what is up.
Hard to fix a problem that you can't describe very well. Also thinking of
draining the trani fluid and then refilling with the know quantitiy of 6
quarts.
Will report back findings.
