I order occasional small items direct from China. Almost always the item is here faster that I can get UPS out of kalifornia. Then last year I needed a new display from China for my laptop. It disappeared into never never for 2 weeks before it surfaced again USPS tracking. I forget where is surfaced but it was some place really odd. Well I have another one just now that did the same thing. China Post shows a hand off, but USPS says nothing for 13 days. This morning is surfaced in Grand Rapids, MI. Huh? How does a package get from China to Grand Rapids, MI? It sure did no get there by boat and no major Carrier flys from China to Grand Rrapids.

Special scanning of inbound parcels?
Lots of possibilities for ITAR violations...just saying.

I notice the same thing. Some research indicated, each country agrees to carry the other's mail without further cost. So, the heathen chinee, in order to help their merchants, have the cheapest first class package rates on the planet. By agreement, USPS has to carry them. It's one of the reasons Chinese stuff is so cheap here. I'm with Joe, I suspect USPS scans or otherwise checks some of them. They don't share their criterion for testing, but I note the little ones get here quickly, bigger/heavier takes a while and the tracking shows some strange routes.
YMMV

Johnny,
Thanks for the info. It explains a lot. It does look like smaller parcels come quickly, but anything over about 8 ounces seems to take a variable amount of time. Some Chinese suppliers, I think, will ship another if you wait too long for delivery. I could never understand the cheap shipping on some items. Cheaper than in USA. I am sure your explanation is comprehensive.

I suspect the heathen chinee postal service doesn't see a lot of junk mail which the USPS carries at a serious loss.

I have been told the same story. By International agreement the origination country sets the shipping rate and keeps all of the money. The destination country is obligated to deliver all packages and mail presented to them.

So when I send a card to Canada, it is the U.S. Post ripping me off? I guess the 'extra' reading of the address is very expensive.
