Those of you who are not in Americus with us are really missing a great
time!
Manny arrived in Atlanta late last Wednesday. Lou Boone, from Peachtree
City picked him up at the airport and loaned him a pickup to come on here.
Lou brought his GMC down Thursday and immediately went on the pit to remove
his transmission. His was the first to be rebuilt and is just about back
in. As soon as he comes off, Paul Falce is going on to remove his
transmission; it will be replaced with a different core.
On Thursday we began tearing down 7 transmissions for Manny to rebuild 6 (a
67 Eldorado switch-pitch case was to be scrapped because of its
incompatible bolt pattern.
Manny probably went back into the shop after supper tonight to do the final
touches on #5; he'll assemble #6 tomorrow morning. He promises to relax
(and join me in the pool) after that, until he leaves on Wednesday. We'll
see.
We've had a great time and few problems. The biggest problem is still
dominant: the torque converters Manny ordered shipped here didn't leave CA
until Friday, so can't possible arrive before tomorrow -- more likely
Wednesday or Thursday. Fortunately Lou's TC was good; Paul will have to
stay on the pit until the new ones arrive.
It looks as if I'll be holding one of the rebuilds for the next nearby
desperate GMCer. Manny and I have decided that this will be our last
adventure like this though. Too bad ff you've missed both of them! :-)

My new used coach has a 'brand new' Manny rebuild, installed and tested just before I picked it up. Performed flawlessly on the trip from CA to GA, spit some excess fluid overboard at the outset.
He's staying home for a while, or you're closing The Henderson Pit Stop, or what?

We both just decided we're getting too old for these high tempo exercises.
I should have mentioned yesterday that John Nichols came up for 3 days, and
Tony Bennett for one. We're expecting David Carroll, from Nahunta, GA,
tomorrow for a few days. One of the new rebuilds is of his core and he's
also going to stick around to help Paul Falce with his R&R. Lou and Manny
will leave to get Manny onto an airplane for CA.
We had a frustrating afternoon: Lou Boone got his coach finished and took
it for a test drive. It would go only in Reverse and First! Manny quickly
decided that the governor was not governing. Since headers and governors
conflict, the just yesterday installed L. header had to come off. Lo &
behold the nylon gear was missing from the shaft -- broken off just below
the roll pen. Worse yet, the gear was not where it should have been --
still on the pin which extends into the bottom of it. Don't even ask how
that happened.
A few days ago I got, and mentioned here, an Endoscope attachment for my
Android 'phone. It's now a Borescope attachment for my Android 'phone. We
used it to discover the terrible news that the gear was crossways in the
transmission housing. After wasting a lot of time trying to grasp and turn
the broken off gear to extract it through the "well", we accepted Manny's
insistence that the final drive and transmission had to come apart again.
Manny wanted us to loosen the bellhousing bolts and mounting bolts to slide
the transmission to the rear. Because we'd had a lot of trouble with the
bellhousing bolts concealed by Lou's EFI wiring, I argued for moving the FD
to the front. Manny was probably right. We wound up having to disconnect
the right axle shaft and the half shaft to get enough opening that way.
But get it we did. And eventually, with the aid of my expensive ($8.99)
Borescope, we managed to grip the gear with long forceps and extract it.
Including R&R of the exhaust manifold, the arguing, figuring, and
floundering, we probably spent 6 hours with 4 of us working the problem.
