Google "Mimicks car audio" for options leveraging modern tech. I know Justin Brady made a gorgeous walnut dash with a Nexus 7 (Android) device in it. I have a ton of Garmin gear between motorcycles, a big boat, my truck and all but I find myself leaning on Google Maps more than anything. If it can't acquire satellites, it uses cell towers and updates are handle by Google--continuously. Having street view and Google Earth options seals the deal for me. Lastly, I rarely have to type in a full address. Just hit Google Maps, Search and begin typing. It usually finds it, tap once to get routing options, then tap again to start navigating. No annoying "recalculating" repetition, it just handles re-routing if you drop off route for DQ Blizzard.

Yes, it uses bandwidth from your data plan so if that is a big concern, or you are using flip phone technology, then erase what you've just read from your noggin and resume the research.
