That is the problem, the original has what I would call a metal wrap or can
that encloses the end of the inner cv joint. The one specified by the
GMCMI parts book is all rubber. Has anyone used the all rubber one for the
inner boot?
Jim K. still has the original one available but I was looking for one
locally.
The one with the metal wrap is obsolete or unavailable through parts stores
in my area.

Be careful. Before I quit using the OEM axles (1 Ton upgrade), I learned
the hard way that when you order rebuilt Toronado axles you are at least as
likely to get incompatible axles. Many, of not most, of the axles being
delivered today have inner and out ends which are compatible with Eldorados
and Toronados, but the axle between the CV joints has different splines
than OEM. Those are NOT compatible with our longer GMCMH axle shafts.
The only safe thing to do is look at the photo on the parts store's
computer. Compare the inner CV joint (or the outer, but the difference is
not as noticeable) with the OEM version. If the photo is like ours, tell
the parts person that what you'll accept MUST look like that photo. When
it arrives, compare again. Chances are, it won't be right. I've ordered
ALL Advance and AutoZone could get from there warehouses, about 12 -- to
get 3 keepers.
As for the all-rubber inner boot, I haven't tried them, and wouldn't. I'm
skeptical about the seal to the triangular housing. Even more, I'm
surprised that anyone needs the inner boot -- I've never seen a bad one.

difficult to reseal, with the big O-ring beneath it, and the necessity to
crimp the can to the base housing.

I work as a parts driver for NAPA. I have asked two of the counter people
about the inner cv joint Napa Part# CVB6861063 and both told me that this
part is obsolete. We have a Napa Distribution center in Denver Colorado,
Billings Montana, and Salt Lake City Utah and neither of them have the
part. The part screen has a square block on the lower left corner with an
"O" inside it claiming that the part is now obsolete.
I am refurbishing two shafts as back-up so I am not in any hurry to get
these done, just wondering if anyone has used this Dorman *614-004 *rubber
boot on the triangular housing and if it was successful. I may have to
bite the bullet and just buy one and see for myself.

I have been down this road before on the axles and you are correct in that
the splines are different in number, if my memory serves me right the NAPA
axle splines have 27 splines and not 31 that the GMC has.

Bruce,
I bought 2 rebuilt axles last fall and they were newly rebuild using that piece, so it must still be available. They were done by Jim Bounds.

John,
That is what is so great about our vendors. They have access to many
suppliers that we shade tree, week-end warrior, raggedy assed or whatever
you want to call it mechanics don't have.
Oreilly's, Autozone, don't even list the canned CV boot anymore. Rock Auto
shows it as out of stock.
When I use your Napa link I get the illustration of the CV boot but on the
right side bar it states "Out of Stock Call Store for Availability".
