I'm not really an expert on this, Bob, but a couple of things I've heard
over the years:
1. You DO need the baffles in them
2. If they're sandblasted before chroming with the baffles in them,
there's a good possibility of residual sand contaminating your motor oil.
I'd watch out for those issues.

Bob
Be careful changing valve covers. The ones used on the GMC motorhome had some special baffles in them that prevented oil loss
through the pcv valve.
Many replacement covers fit fine but don't have the baffles resulting in oil usage going high
Be sure to compare the underside of the covers to see if the baffles are there and are the same.

We used to have a saying in drag racing, "If it don't go, chrome it".
Simply explained, it meant that performance is largely unaffected by fancy
chrome and bling. The race cars to watch out for were painted and tidy, but
very little was spent on dress up parts. After the car's racing days were
over, then, cosmetic touches were added and the car went on the show car
circuit.
No one looks under the engine hatch at GMC rallies unless it won't
start when the rally is over. I have watched. Heck, most of the time owners
don't even do a walk around to see if they have air in their tires, or
that their lights and turn signals work.

Don't sand blast chrome or do anything to valve covers, too hard to get all the crud out of them afterwords.
Just paint them Olds Blue and live a long happy life.
But I'm skeptical about the engine blowing up because of valve covers.
What does that even mean anyway?

Jim,
Hmmmmmm, at GMCMI Conventions they have a couple of days of Open House where owners show off their GMC's, and visitors vote for the
"best" one. A prize is awarded to the winner.
Your statement regarding looking under the engine hatch has given me an idea, on my "new" Kingsley I'm going to "bling" up the Caddy
500 and put a glass panel in the middle of the hatch ala Dan & Tri Gregg's GMC.
It might give me an edge in winning the "best" coach contest.

Problem with most chromed valve covers are the fact that they do not have
baffles to keep oil from beig drawn up by the PVC vale and the Air cleaner.
