Does anyone know what size the A/C orifice is on a 1978 Royale? I need to replace mine according to the A/C guy. Thanks in advance!

John,
If my thinking is right you have an expansion valve system, not an orifice system.
I have not seen a vehicle AC without an expansion type valve'
Check the part houses or the net for the valve needed.

If he says that you need a new orifice, then he does not know much about the GMC A/C system. I would look for another repair facility or better yet, start here by telling us what is the status of your system.

I think "needs a new orifice" is AC shop lingo for "we're going to ream your orifice"
Find a non crook, but thats difficult to do in the AC repair business, they all think they are wizards

Fraud alert! FRAUD ALERT!
Since an orifice is under $5.00, I would take them a new one and ask exactly where they intend to install it.

Matt, I have told this story before and this sounds like the same guy.
My daughter took her Blazer in for a front end alignment. They put her car on the alignment rack and then came to her and said:
Service writer: "You need your ball joints replaced. We can't align it that way it is."
Heather: "Which ones are bad?"
SW: "All of them"
Heather: "That is interesting because I just replaced the lowers 3 weeks ago."
SW: "Well whoever said they did the work did not replace them."
Heather: "I did the work. That is why I brought it to you to check the alignment. Take my car off of your alignment rack and I'll take it to an honest place of business."
I think this same guy or company also does AC work.

My S-10 had a similar experience in Atlanta a few years ago: I was at a
tire/alignment shop for some unrecalled reason. They were running a
"special" on alignment, so I let them put my 40K mile S-10 on the rack.
"MAN! You need lower ball joints BAD! Those S-10's have the worst ball
joints on the road. They're so bad, they're the only ones we keep in
stock!"
Begging off on schedule, I left & haven't been back to an alignment shop
during the past 80K+ miles. Never had any adverse tire wear and the S-10
still drives better than the Lexus. :-)

The reason I bought a 240v computer spin balancing machine. They don't jack your vehicle wrong, crossthread the lugs, run the nuts down with an impact and then get the balance wrong when then can't get near your vehicle.

I made the mistake of getting a 'free' tire inspection the day before leaving on a trip, and told them so.
They just happened to find a large fresh knife cut on the inside sidewall of my rear tire.
I looked at it, looked at the angle of the slash and I knew they had done it. They knew I knew.
I think I said something about it being a knife cut.
They just happened to have a replacement tire available right away.
Lucky me

Otherwise they just use a cone going through the center hole. If doing this they could check the balance again and they would find its wrong. I once had them check a wheel three times and they kept changing the position of the wrights and it still wasn't right. I finally took the motorhome to another shop that did it right.

Check the part houses or the net for the valve needed.
Almost all new vehicles use an orifice tube in place of an expansion valve--however the GMC is not one of them.

Bob,
What kind of performance can be expected with constant metered freon flow system, like used on house fridge/freezer and cheap room AC units?
Expansion valves adjusts the freon flow to the cooling demand, and a vehicle can have a lot of variable cooling demands. Hot car with 1 heater (driver)
to a hot car and 4 heaters (persons).
I like to have excess BTU and not use all of it all the time, then to be at max and also be sweating.
I'm not one in the global warming corner.
