The upper left corner of the web page has a "1 new message " statement, when I opened it I had a blue screen of death and smaller page that announced a virus alert. Tried to close and could not, did turn off machine and rebooted. Same Message still there.

Ouch! Hope that you have it solved by now. If not, immediately disconnect the computer from the Internet. If you cannot disconnect, turn your router off. Attempt a 'three finger salute' and see if you can 'rewind' back to a known good point. If the does not work, attempt to interrupt booting by hitting the 'F2' key. Do you have a rescue disk? These are getting very difficult to kill off.

On Windows right click on the start bar, select task manager and kill the browser task ( Explorer, Firefox, chrome)
Do not restore pages when it restarts!
You can also press Windows + X to get a menu with task manager on it

Tom,
Do you see what I am talking about? Just under the Blue GMCforum Banner I see a message in blue "(You have 2 new messages) Under that it says "Free app that lets you easily check new messages"
If I click on that I get the blue screen of death along with notice that my computer has a virus. No matter what I do to eliminate these messages new ones keep coming up. The message tells me to Not turn off my computer.
I did turn off and reboot without a problem but believe this is some kind of scam.

It is a scam.
It is a way to get people to pay money to the company so they can tell them to turn the computer off then back on.

Your are correct, it is a scam.
I have reported that ad to google many, many times and it still appears.
Google doesn't seem to give a damn about it or the company is continuing to
change the billing and address location.
Maybe Eugene can do something about it.
It's about as bad as the credit card scam on Costco converting from
American Express to CITI phone calls that I keep getting.
If you get one from 855-805-5486, it's a scam.

That's an ad (albeit a scam ad, originating from Google AdSense) - it has very little to do with the GMC forum… It likely originates at the web hosting end.
I don't see these ads on my network - I block all ad URL's at my firewalls…
The blue screen you are seeing is likely not truly a "MS blue screen of death", it's like a browser redirect that is trying to make you think it's worse than it is (although some of these can be difficult to remove) by showing you a fake BSoD.
If a person insists on running Windoze, Malwarebytes is your friend! More often than not, it will clean these redirect problems:
https://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-browser-redirect-virus/
But the best method: don't click on them in the first place!
