Hello all,

I have a '76 Eleganza II with about 90,000 miles and have lost the large fix glass on the driver's side.

1st time was a 50 deg day, driving about 60 MPH and about 10 miles into a trip. The fixed glass of the original window just behind the drive broke. It must have broken first because there was lots of glass inside the coach. The center divider bar was bent but still in place. Not sure if other windows where open.

2nd time was on a 90 deg day, driving about 70 MPH after 250 miles into the trip. This was the later style window. The divider bar and most of the glass was gone. All other windows were closed and the AC was on.

Neither time was I braking, accelerating, going over bumps, feeling tire vibration or anything else like that.

Besides where the divider bars bent the frame, the window frame looks in good shape. Not distorted or lose to the coach.

Has anyone else had their side window(s) fall/blowout while driving? It has happened to me twice and I am wondering if there may be an underline problem I need to address before I replace it again.

Also, without the divider, I am assuming I have to replace the whole window? Anyone have one?

thanks in advance

Todd

Todd,

Do you have the PPG glass in your coach or the LOF glass?

Pittsburg Plate Glass or Libby Owens Ford.

GM switched glass in either the 75 or 76 year and I don't remember
which year.

I sent you a PM.

i'm not sure but believe the first one was the old style and the 2nd one was the new style because they are different and the replacement came from a coach with an 85 MPH speedo.

I tend to think that either the frame is defective or someone shot at it.
Don't blame the glass.

On my '76 the fixed glass tried to escape sitting in the driveway. The sun
had softened everything and the center bar was being pushed back. The glass
was minutes away from just dropping to the ground. I pushed it forward and
riveted the bar in place. No more troubles.

Todd,

Look at the glass closely and you should see an imprint
either LOF or PPG.

IIRC, the imprint is usually located at the lower right had corner
of the glass when viewed from the outside.

They should be PPG. The changeover was LOF prior to 75 and
PPG for 75 and later models, according to parts manual.

What kind of condition is your rubber window strip in? When I was replacing some in one of my windows a couple of months ago, the glass would slide and almost fall out before I got the rubber replaced. Tempered glass is really hard to break without some sort of sharp impact. Possibly the glass has shifted and there is a point on the frame that is contacting the glass and causing the problem.

Tempered glass breaks real easy when pinged on an edge. Look for either: something about the frame putting pressure to bend it, or something that might give it a solid rap on an edge.

Yup...but I wasn't driving it. Luckily there was a parts coach at hand for quick replacement.

from the comments, it sounds like it just happens sometimes and it just happened to be the same window both times.

I'll replace it, and the frame, making sure the center divider bar is in place.

thanks for the feedback
