About a year and half ago I renovated the dash air (type 2) in my Palm Beach. Part of the renovation was the installation of a new Sanden compressor I bought from Applied, new receiver/dryer and expansion valve. I continued the use of HC-12 as refrigerant. After a through flushing, vacuuming and testing for leaks, I charged the system to 20 lbs on the low side @ 1,500 RPM. Since then, it has not been that hot where I needed dash air.
However, this past month has seen temps during my travels in the high 80s and low 90's with high humidity. I am now running dash air continuously. I am getting nice cold air, but I've noticed my Sanden is very noisy when engaged. So loud, that if that noise is standard with Sandens, I wish I had kept the A6 installed since I never heard it run. I only replaced it because people here recommended I get one. Now I am not so sure since I would like to add a 2nd evaporator and Sandens have less capacity than the venerable A6.
Am I the only one with a loud Sanden AC compressor?

Richard,
My "Sanden" is very quiet. As they should all be. Just think about how
many millions of cars are on the road with them -- they couldn't all be
noisy. Even many recent GM vehicles use them.

Ken,
Thanks for the fast response.
OK That is what I thought, Sandens are normally quiet. Either I did something wrong (which is often the case with me) during installation or I have a bad Sanden from the factory. The "new" compressor is long out of warranty I suspect since it sat next to my desk for over a year before I got around to getting it in my GMC.
Without knowing the cause I would hate to buy another Sanden only to find the same sound. I better get busy, but there is an engine oil leak to fix from my last trip, that takes priority

STOP!
Is it a loud buzzing sound?
The Sanden has bolts on the outside of the pulley, if your hoses are not tight against the floorboards the bolts hot the hoses!
It doesn't take long to saw through them.
That is what caused me to have to redo mine for the second time.
Other than that, it's dead quiet for me

Keith,
As a matter of fact, it is a buzzing sound. I know there is little space down there. I went out of my way to make sure the hoses did not come close to the pulley.
I went out to the GMC just now and took a look. The hoses are still well clear of the pulley. However, there is a big wire loom very close to the pulley that shows signs of being worn by the pulley bolts. With the engine off, the loom is well clear by an inch or so. But it is loose enough that I can push it toward the pulley and the worn spot (like a grove) lines up with the bolts. Perhaps with the engine running at highway speed, the fan was causing the loom to come in contact with the pulley bolts. As a potential fix, I'll wire tie it firmly away from the pulley and see what happens. I don't have time to drive it now.
I think that was the problem. If so, WOW what an easy fix! Thanks to an exchange of a few emails back and forth on this list I potentially caught the problem early enough to avoid any damage and/or replacing a perfectly good compressor.
I wonder if Facebook would have had an answer as fast as from the GMCNET?
Thanks,

Nobody misses a chance here to bash the "other side". But as soon as anybody on FB mentions GMCnet, panties sure get knotted over here!

RJW,
Mine would only hit the hoses when the engine tourqued over under acceleration, at idle and once moving it was fine.
But hit the gas off a light and Bzzzzzzzz . Then the complete loss of refrigerant :(
Those bolts suck!
I hope yours is just the wire loom

I'll let you know when I drive it Sunday to fill up with $1/gal off Kroger gas.
Pretty sure the hoses are clear of the pulley, but will pay attention to those as well.
Thanks for the heads up on the pulley situation. I had not considered those bolts as a potential problem.

Thanks,
Richard,
You may get a fast answer on FaceBook, but quite honestly, the reason I still read it is because there are many over there providing bad advice to GMC owners. One time recently a writer responded with how to do all kinds of good things to a 454.....
Facebook is great for social communication, but above, I just referenced two bits that I wrote years ago. It was not difficult to relocate the pages.
And Yes, they get their panties all in a knot. So, I just don't. What I do often do is ask if they have the manuals and then let Billy add the link.

Sanden units are not noisy, somethig is wrong.
Check the mounting bolts and see where the noise is being generated.
Let us know.
