One benefit of being in northern Canada and Alaska for as long as we were is that for much of that time we were burning fuel that did not say it contained any ethanol. That does not mean it didn’t, only that the pumps had no such notation. When we asked, most attendants had no idea. Once in a while we would get some one who would say, “I don’t think so” or “the truck driver never said anything about that”.

Anyway, the coach ran great and showed no propensity to vapor lock at all. Carb and HEI are both by Patterson. Our overall mileage was 8.5mpg which is quite respectable for this heavy 78 Royale. From the puff of black smoke on start up hot or cold, it always appeared to start rich which likely means I have more to do to try to get this electric choke to work correctly. The black puff never lasted more than a few seconds so it might also be from fuel puddling in the intake manifold but Dick said he seals his carbs so they should not leak from the bowl plugs.

Strong running, no vapor lock issues and reasonable fuel consumption make it hard for me to justify converting this coach over to the FiTech EFI like I did with the Clasco. By the time of the October five club rally at Coos Bay, OR, I will make that decision as I am going to do a presentation on fuel injection for our GMC coaches there. I plan to cover everything from the earliest mechanical systems through the 80s and 90s production throttle body units which can be and have been converted to use on our GMCs right up to the newest self learning systems. I hope it will shed some useful light on this hotly debated topic.

And, yes, I know I have to wear a target on my back to attempt such a presentation in this crowd! So, ya’ll come and protect me from the arrows……….
