If you are not towing or in mountainous terrain and you are getting 7 mpg then you need a tune-up! A properly tuned carbureted GMC should get at least 9 mpg on level ground averaging 60-65 mph. I have managed over 10'with mine (no towing, dash air on, generator off, 65 mph). I have gone through and set base timing at 12 degrees, ensured the mech and vac advance work, and spent time dialing the Qjet in with the help of an A/F meter (15.5:1 at cruise, 14.5:1 around town, 10.5:1 on steep grades)
As always "your mileage may vary"

Homer, I bought my coach 3.5 years ago and it came with an archaic "Air Sensor" EFI on it. It seemed to work ok but I was concerned about the availability of parts when it failed. I took it off and installed Professional Product's Powerjection III on it. I was fairly well satisfied with this system until it completely failed earlier this year, and learned that I couldn't get it repaired for at least 6 weeks(evidently this was a problematic system). That system set me back about $2000.00. Not wanting to wait 6 weeks to get my coach running, I ordered and installed the Fitech system that has been discussed on this forum. It set me back exactly half of what the previous system did and it works wonderfully. Furthermore, when I had questions, their tech support was available quickly and answered all my questions professionally. I would highly recommend the Fitech system, for ease of installation, good support staff and of course a reasonable cost. Oh by the way I did realize a little bump in fuel mileage but not enough to offset the cost of the system any time soon.

We sell MSD, Howell, and Holley systems.
The one I endorse id the Howell with the EBL option as parts a re readily
available and the tech support is 7 days a week and we have several GMC
owners that can hook up to your unit to see what is happening.
The Howell unit we sell has the EBL ECM which controls the ignition timing
so well, that you will see performance and milage. I openly tell people
they can be assured 1-2mpg improvement.
The Holly system is also good as it does control ignition timing, but
requires one to program it and takes time to map out the fuel and timing
for loads and temperature.
EBL from us comes with the latest fuel and timing curves for all conditions
, plug and play.
I have been running EFI since 1990 so in many ways I know what timing can
do.
On our coaches, I have a fairly good handle on the fuel deliver from tht
tank to the injectors. Without the experience, you can end up with any EFI
with vapor lock..
