A 74 GMC here with a 455 Olds. This coach has headers, and trans has to be removed. Do we have to remove or loosen the headers to get the transmission down?
Thanks

No. Definitely not.

The difficult part is re-installing the upper left bell housing bolt.
Manny uses an air ratchet. I drilled a hole in the step riser directly
behind it after having spent 1 hour trying to put them in.

Larry,
We have removed the tranny in my 76 with headers a couple of times. Never had to loosen or remove the headers.

Thanks guys. I've removed/replaced transmissions quite a few times, but have never dealt with header issues relative to trans removal. I thought maybe if governor removal from trans is an issue around headers, that maybe there are other issues that I'm not aware of.

A fella from Nebraska ended up with a bad trans just 25 mi from my home. We arranged for transportation of the coach to a reliable garage here in Menomonie, and hope to begin removal tomorrow. Trans will be rebuilt by Transformation Performance of Ramsey Mn., and reinstalled later this week...or at least that is the plan.

You know how it is...we make plans and God laughs at us....

Same here on my 76. I have had it out twice. Once it was jacked up and the wheel liners removed, It was 1 hour for two people to take it out and 1.5 hours for 2 people to install it.

I have seen Manny do it by himself without power tools in about the same time.
