Three things of varying importance.
The only thing between the start switch and the starter is the neutral safety switch. If you could crank it at the starter but not from the key with the NSS by-passed, then the ignition switch is probably Chase's problem. These are known to get out of adjustment. That switch is located down on the steering column. If it can be cranked from there. It is the column linkage (a common mode failure).
Though rebuilt starters are available after some delay (just as you discovered), the last time they were used in production 1978. They are no longer shelf stock in all but a few stores. The fact is that a bad starter will leave you very motionless and there is no "work around" that I know off. Therefore, in my 23' coach where storage is an absolute premium, I carry a back up starter. These starters are too robust for their own good and they will keep on cranking the engine long after they should have quit. When they do quit, it will be like a bad battery cable about two starts worth. Then, you are DONE.

If it started by jumping the solenoid coil then there is nothing wrong with the starter or solenoid. There are only three things in the circuit feeding the solenoid. The start switch (ignition switch) the neutral safety switch, and the wires connecting them.
The neutral safety switch and the ignition switch are located on the lower steering column and are easily replace able.
I have also seen this problem being a worn ignition key assembly. If this is worn, you can still go down the column and pull on the actual switch to get it to start. All three of these items are available cheap from AutoZone.
