Anyone care to comment on the wisdom or stupidity of owning a parts coach?

I have discovered two coaches about 15 miles from me. One is a 1974, and one is 1975. I believe the 74 may be a Glacier, and am pretty sure the 75 is a Palm Beach. They are both complete basket cases. The tires and airbags are all blown. The 75 back glass is busted out. Other than that they appear complete. Very Happy The '75 had license plates that expired 2008. The '73 had no plates at all.

I have enough space in my back yard that I could store one or both of these, but not sure I want to.

I suspect it would take somewhere between $1000-$3000 just to get wheels/tires/airbags to the point where it could be safely towed (and that is just for one of them). Knowing nothing about the steering or brakes, and considering they are this close to me, I really have no desire to try to drive one home; so add a tow bill.

Try to save, or let die? What say you?

I have already passed the TZE numbers to John Shotwell, who has informed me that neither were previously listed in the database.

Do you need the parts?
Otherwise you're just transferring them to rot at your house rather than someone else's and spending money on it to boot.
There aren't many parts that are not available, so personally I wouldn't take on someone else's problem willingly.

I feel really bad about scrapping a GMC.
One day, they will be worth keeping.
Until then...?

Sounds like its two bodies and frames if they are decent for someone who needs them down the road, when that is who knows.

Unless they are free and you really dont care what the back yard looks like.... Look at them as cores. You'd have two core motors, two core transmissions. misc pieces and parts galore that may not work with your coach but would be worth a few bucks to someone. CVs, Axles etc. But parting them out would take some time if thats what you intended to do. Agree with Harry, Some day to someone they will be worth something.

You got wheels on yours? Put yours on blocks and take the wheels off, haul the wheels to the derelict and swap them out on site. Use airbag alternatives to get the rear suspension up ( http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/air-bag-spring-systems/p35282-norman-27s-airbag.html ). Throw the old wheels in it and tow it home. Put the good wheels back on your driver and the old ones back on the derelict.

If you got a truck or tractor that will tow one, cut your costs even more.

I have had a couple conversations with people on coaches a step better then that. Unless they are free, you want nothing to do with them. and then only if you have lots of time and motivation to deal with them.

the only other thought, is if you need storage at your place, you could use them as storage. again, only if free.

Paul,

If you can get a firm price from the current owner and if they have keys and titles, they might be worth acquiring.
If the airspings and tires are down, they may just have leaked and might hold air long enough to transport them.
There are indeed a myriad of parts that might be worth recovering.
If you come back here with some negotiated values, we can offer a better opinion.

I currently have a friend's parts coach in my back yard. We had thought it might be recovered, but cheap running coaches are just too available and this one is a ways from that.

For reference.
The total cost for the current owner was 1200.
That was the cost of the coach, site preparation (you want it level and poly covered), storage blocking and then towing (it didn't roll as a brake was locked).
It is here and we know what we have. There is still a lot there. Two roof airs, and a gas reefer, a roof pod (the owner wants the ladder) an engine that we can turn, and a transmission we are pretty sure is still good. And then all the other stuff.

The current owner wanted the sofa and so we took that out. The rest is waiting to see what we might need.

It is really annoying to not have any keys. I would like to get the service door open and have not yet managed because then I could test a lot more of the things.

Matt

Better to salvage parts from where they sit. Engine and trans cores, A-arms, hub/knuckles, HVAC controls, air suspension controls,
brake drums, ...

Bob Dunahugh is having a field day today on a couple hulks at Colaws. He's plum giddy about it. :-) haha He said he keeps piling
up parts and they keep telling him for each pile, $20.

We went by there yesterday in a 4 coach caravan but didn't stop. :-( I'll kick myself for a long time over that one.
