My daughter in Oregon is considering buying a car located in Nebraska. The owner is a Naval officer stationed in Greece.

The seller has proposed that she deposit funds with Ebay- the car will be shipped to Portland and she will have 5 days to inspect and either accept or reject the car. If rejected, the car is returned to Nebraska and Ebay returns the funds to her.

I know there are many Ebay users on this forum. Any comments, advise, or suggestions?

Thanks

I would be EXTREMELY skeptical of this situation. But then, like the scorpion said, that's just my nature...

John,

I am Very, extreemly, skeptical, and cautious. That's why I'm looking for some one who is familiar with this process.

I know other people who have bought cars sight unseen (except through pictures) had them shipped and were perfectly satisfied with the results. But those were "collector" cars. Not daily drivers and Ebay was not involved.

Thanks for your input.

Tell your daughter to “run not walk away from this”.
This is a typical eBay scam.
The military, the free shipping, etc. all are indicators. Also, Ebay does NOT have any procedure to hold deposits. If she sends funds they will go elsewhere and she will never get them back.

Google “eBay car scams” and you will find many discussions of this.

1st of all, If you live in Oregon, why would you buy a car from Nebraska???? I live a state away, and I wish I could buy all my cars from Oregon and not local!

I have sold a couple cars off ebay- one just recently. I have not used escrow, but it is a legit service, just copied alot for scams.

there are a few things that make me say run away from what you stated, there is a cost to use escrow:

#1. escrow.com is the only site that ebay would use. sorta like Paypal.... never use western union!

#2 - if you reject the car- you pay the return shipping, not the seller. there are also fees to pay escrow.com.

I would also guess the auction deposit is non-refundable. So she could be looking at $1500 bucks if she was to not accept the car.

Basically, if you are buying from an ebay user, you are rolling the dice, and hopefully the price will reflect that, or the car is rare enough that you cannot find local. check there profile and check there feedback.

Who is arranging the shipping?? usually it is the buyer who sets up the shipping. If the seller is setting up shipping, I would be very concerned as well.

I have never purchased a car off ebay.

Something over 1500 miles to ship? The cost would more than offset the difference in price buying locally. SCAM Alert.
Out of the purest curiosity, which make/model of car? And, what's so enticing about this particular one?

Gene, get ahold of EBAY'S fraud/scam dept. And let them investigate the
situation. I've seen this before on there and had them look into it for me.
Glad I did, total scam.

I agree with everything already mentioned. One easy way to sniff out a scammer is to request the current location of the vehicle and mention you'll send someone over to see it.

In virtually every case - there will be an excuse why the address isn't available… If they offer an address - then find someone local that can put eyes on it. I'm sure if you pay an impartial Nebraska mechanic $50-$100, they'll go look at it.

Having said that - I'd be looking for a vehicle from the west or southwest...

This is a very common scam. They seem to like to use the military as an excuse as to why the person is not on site.

Run, Run, Run, away from this one.

Do NOT post a down payment / deposit on this car.

There's already enough said. But if you need another view, I bet the car is a screaming deal. As it would be if true. Too good to be true. It isn't true,
people are trying to fish your family. I bet the car probably doesn't exist. Correction, it exists, but doesn't belong to the scammers.

Piling on a bit, but personally I would NEVER buy a car sight unseen. Fly to look at it. Arrange for friend to go look at it, otherwise pass.
