Just got a Black list call from an owner broken down on the freeway northbound 8 miles north of Corsicana, TX, about 15 miles from me. Reported problems: Noise, sparks, and overheating.

Can't speculate, will go down there now with pickup, which could tow him short distances if we can get it to idle and hold vacuum.

Will post with cell phone if feasible.

Carey

Tried to post with cell phone. 26' 1976 Palm Beach. 455 cid engine. Harmonic balancer is rubbing against something metal, hard to tell, it looks wobbly. Sparks fly. Rubbing on the top edges of the pulleys. It has a debris cage, so hard to touch it on the road. Ran down the battery with the flashers. Owner has a tow truck coming, he has relations in Corsicana, 8 miles away to stay with and a family friend, K&S tire and service will put up the coach and see to it tomorrow. The transmission cooler hose is weeping fluid. The engine overheated (from lack of fan drive?). He will replace both sets of hoses, check other hoses, and get a harmonic balancer put in unless maybe the water pump bearings gave up and it sagged down on the harmonic balancer, hard to tell unless it was running, which he couldn't get it to do. No battery left.

What say the helpers? Any problem to be anticipated, besides topping off fluids before setting off after repair?

Look to a failed water pump which has lunched the front bearing and beat up stuff on the front of the engine. As long as the fan hasn't eaten the radiator it's time consuming but not terribly hard to correct. If the pump pulley has been damaged or come apart, KEEP THE PIECES. That pulley (three sheave) is made of unobtanium as far as I can tell, he'll have to repair it if it's broken loose. Luck,

Thanks Johnny,

I will relay your information about the water pump and pulley. I think that's the most likely explanation.

At a presentation about the fire department last week, the chief mentioned he was having his "young guys" trained to do tower rescues from up to 300 feet. He had no interest in it. Neither do I. I reckon if you can do it 300 feet, you can do it 2000 feet. They say after 38 years old you don't want to bungee jump. I used to do some rock climbing, but I get the water guts on the second story roof now. When do you do the Oklahoma tower work?

Best,

Carey

I am a division manager for a telecommunications contract company. My area, is crews that work inside buildings and homes. My office/warehouse/shop, is split up between my crews and our Wireless Division. Our underground ditch digging is in another building. They are always wanting to hire the "young guys", but we have to be politically correct and not be discriminatory about age. It is amazing what these crews do out there at 100', 200' or 2000' in the air. They do all there "jobsite QC" checks now by live video. after they complete the site upgrades or work, they then go climb all over the tower, rooftops, water tower... You name it they put antennas on it. and hold on to a cell phone and video conferencing with the so called engineers/QC guys sitting somewhere else in a nice office checking all the mounts, connections ect.... So far they have not dropped a phone. Pretty crazy and fun stuff to watch. My coworker in the next office certifies the climbers with a tower we have right onsite here and it is only 40-50 feet, and they do practice rescues off of it.

on the GMC note- sounds like he will be digging into the front of the engine. The harmonic balancer is kinda a 2 part deal, and can become separated, but that is so very rare. Just hope there is no other internal damage to the engine from running hot. glad you were able to at least attempt to assist.

Carey -

Due diligence and an install sometime on October. I don't climb them at all. Since all broadcasters are out to cut one another's throat my stuff is confidential. Don't go beyond what State i'm in. All riggers are deranged Smile.
R D's service in Gastonia did the water pump when it failed catastrophically on mine, and Steve got a machinist he knew to rebuild the pulley which had come apart. Still on the engine, still works well three years later. That was where I asked if he was going to call the machinist and he says no, if you bother him your job goes to the bottom of the pile. The guy showed up as advertised at 3P with the repaired pulley.
