[GMCnet] The old Buzz Box [message #302632] |

I’ve been off the net pretty much for the past couple of years and I’m wondering if, in my absence, someone has come up with any good use for the old original buzz box.
I’m terrible at keeping stuff that might someday be useful but I’m cleaning out my garage and . . . Well you understand.
Any reason why I shouldn’t just put it in the recycle bucket and let the trash folks deal with it?

Bill,
Do you or one of you progeny have a friend that dabbles in electronics??
This could be the guy you know that repairs antique car radios or is an avid ham that builds or repairs things.
They are a Great ~12V bench power supply. Cleaner power than many of the newer type and at 40amp, lots of room for loading up.
They are also (I am told, I have not done) a good power supply for electro-chemically de-rusting steel.

As Colie points out, makes an excellent bench power supply. I left one that was given me at my last job, with five fused outlets to a barrier strip, and a couple of 'wall wart' connectors of various sizes. About the cheapest commercial product is the MFJ switcher, it's 150 bux. And if you don't want the electronic noise and garbage from a switcher, the old brute force ones from the GMC are the move. The Astron brute force is $280.
Note that in your GMC, switching noise from a power supply will be lost in the background. In a broadcast studio environment, it matters.

Do you own a boat?
They make a good boat anchors for shallow water and sink well in the mud. Do not use it in deep water for an anchor unless you have a very heavy chain attached to it.
One of your fellow Buckeye fans here at the GMCMI rally suggested that you see if you can get a second one. He says in Ohio they use them to chock tires on a GMC.

Change is certain, progress is not I'll pile on here. I got one that doesn't produce 12V if anyone wants it. Anybody going up or down I-65 past Cullman AL let me know at least an hour in advance and I can meet you at one of the Cullman exits to convey possession. Last time I threatened to recycle it if no one claimed it must have been a bluff, because I still have it. But this time I mean it...
