Thanks to all for the pre-purchase advice. Ended up getting one locally (Phoenix, we're in Tucson). It's a 76 Eleganza II. It checked all of the boxes mechanically. I'm going to start going through it this week and plan on a trip to Oregon next month.

I'm used to big rig diesels so I was interested in how the driving experience would differ. The GMC handled pretty well and seems to have plenty of power. The brakes (electric discs) did fine too. It was much quieter than I expected (years ago we had a Winnebago Minnie and that V-10 just roared).

Here's a photo. I'm sure many of you will recognize this rig. Gotta get some tire covers. Oops. Couldn't load the file as it indiates a 1 kilobyte maximum? I better do some research!

John,

Welcome!

I've just got one question: "...electric discs..."? What's that?

Jor, initials work,

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum....

I'm sure others here would like to know what you mean be "Electric Disks".

Before long, please build a sigfile with your real name (so when you meet other owners, they might know who you are), a short bit about the coach and important modes (this helps us get you the important answers on the first try), and a geographic reference (for three reasons, those working the E-mail side never saw the Tucson in the header, 2 - Someone that might help will know if he is in striking range, 3 - We are ready with climate specific information that might help. Some of this to follow.) It will make everything easier.

Get WHITE tire covers. Here Goes...

Speaking of climate specific....
At Glamarama, I the pleasure to listen to and then have a serious talk with a retired tire engineer named Roger Marbles..OK...
Not so much Ozone, but HEAT is what kills standing still tires. He pointed out several there with white tire covers and said that those people had it right and others had black covers. He said that if the black covers were at Quartzsite, they would do more harm than good. Actually, I learned a lot but have not yet managed to distill it enough to write more than what I just did. I will write it up when I am sure that I understand it.

Now, back to John, (We really don't care what nic you use)
You have just become a member of a most interesting and effective community. They are extremely helpful and supportive of all members. The only way they will let you stray from the best path is if you ignore the advice of the people here that know about these old beauties. You need to get to a rally as soon as practical so you can meet some of your brand new old friends. The only other community like this is that of the watermen of my world. For that reason, I have taken to welcoming new owners as a new owner or vessel would be welcomed there. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Welcome John,

Matt

Welcome. We got our first GMC in 2007 and our current coach in 2009. We have traveled 50K+ miles and love it. You will find them a wonderfully designed machine and great people who own them.

It's Steve Ferguson's old coach (a couple owners ago). Yes, I believe it has a powermaster brake booster.

Updated the sig. Wasn't sure how much to put in there.

Well, the thing is he doesn't know what he's talking about! It has discs all around and I was told it was converted to electric brakes. I'm going to get into it this week and figure out how everything works so I'll be able to ask semi-intelligent questions (hope springs eternal). I have a lot to learn. For example, I'm used to air bag suspensions but never even heard of the word "bogey!" Thanks for the welcome.

Maybe it has an electric vacuum pump for the brakes.

John,

The filled in sig is great.

It probably has a DC powered brake booster. They are good, but not an easy mod.

This air suspension is probably very different than anything you have known before. It is also very successful, but rarely copied.

The bogey is the term for a wheels on a swing arm suspension. In the case of a GMC, the rear wheels are technically a single axle as there is a single suspension for both (one airspring). This is why the published wheel base is to the center between them. Toll takers will still rip you off for being a three axle and most charge us the same as a Greyhound.

I think he has the Power Master unit that uses electric at the Master
cylinder, not at disc.
To my knowledge, they are no longer available.
