sorry, newbie with a million questions/ideas/wants

Has anyone setup a second option for a push button to also control the windshield wipers? I'd love to push a button, have them cycle once. since there's no delay; and the windshield is Rain-xed, in misty weather I found myself wanting to wipe across every few minutes, but only once. The lever is hard to move and awkward.

this seems like something I should be able to do?

Kelly - the original wiper motor is a hydraulic mechanism, not the electrical motor you are likely used to from any automobile in the last 30 years or so. When you pull the lever to activate your wipers, the other end of the cable pulls on a lever that pushes a button that in turns activates the motor. I'm overs simplifying a little, but not too much. You can see e mechanism at OK if you open th driver side access panel on the front of your coach. The thing staright in front of you, to the right of your brake master cylinder, is the wiper motor. You will see two hydraulic lines going up to it. The amount the lever depresses the button (which in turn is controlled by how far you move the lever in the cabin) controls the speed of your wipers.

Long response to a simple answer - no. There isn't a button to be installed due to the nature of the system being hydraulic and not electrical. However, Ken Hendrson make an excellent adapter that allows you to mount an electric motor from a Lumina or similar minivan. This opens up possibilities like what you are looking for. I just installed his bracket with a motor I pulled in an earlier trip to the salvage yard. Easy job, and wiring isn't too bad. Lots of details here and on the photo site on installation if you want to go that route.

Plan on $350-400 for the bracket, wiring harness and motor. If your system is working fine, save the parts as both the hydraulic motor and cable are no longer available. My cable snapped but motor is fine, so I'll likely bring to Branson in case someone is looking for one.

Kelly, As Matt stated, Ken H. makes a great electric wiper conversion kits. My hydraulics were working fine, but I thought they were somewhat of an annoyance to operate. While redoing my coach the wiper upgrade was a low priority, so it was one of the last major upgrades I did. Now that I have installed them (and used them quite a bit) it is one of my favorite upgrades. If I had to do it all over again I would move that upgrade close to the top of my list. I don't think you can go wrong with Ken's kit if you're not happy with your current kit.
Ken was very helpful and patient when I called with questions concerning the installation and adjustments. He even took time to look at it when I met him at GMCMI in Rapid City last fall. A guy like me that is somewhat mechanically challenged appreciates all the help he can get and Ken gives it in spades.

Kelly,
It might not work like this on any others, but on my 76, I just nudge the
lever a bit over from off. Eventually enough pressure builds up to run the
wipers for one sweep. A slow sweep... and then it leaks enough to do it
again after a while.
I'd go electric if I had the money. But for now, I nudge it over and wait.

I did a similar thing, nudge it to get it to go and then turn it off.
Thank you for the replies- I've had vacuum powered wipers on a 70 Scout 2 but not hydraulic.

Some day I may opt for the electric version, I can see this being a great change sometime down the line

The hydraulic motor obn both of mine works fine, has plenty of power. What I wanna do one day when I'm terminally bored is figure the setup to make them run perpendicular to the road, like a bus. I think I could get them to cover more of the windshield that way. It may be wishful thinking...

Johnny,

If you decide to follow up on that idea, here's a source for wiper
equipment, including the pantograph system you mentioned:
http://www.amequipment.com/

I buy one of the parts in the electric wiper kit from them, and have bought
other parts. Good company.

But if you come up with a way to sweep the entire passenger windshield,
don't you dare let HER see it or I'll never hear the last of it!

What you are trying to do requires a "parallel arm" assembly. It is a
pivoting head to hold the blade and a rod anchored to the cowl
and attached to an arm off the pivoting head holding the wiper blade.
When I'm out and about on a locomotive this coming week
I'll try and remember to get a picture. It is fairly simple but some of
the parts may be "challenging" to get.

The others will discuss wipers, I'm selling : http://www.gmcnoreasters.org/
I was a member for a while and they seemed like a great group.

Good to have you with us and better to see you have found the signature
section of your email. It tells me you are in Putney and while it quite
obviously wasn't yesterday, I do remember a girl's school being located in
Putney, or at least there were girls in it !

Good to have you aboard.

Have a look at the site Ken Henderson posted. The parallel arms are available in several sizes, and they say they will custom them if you wish (for a substantial price no doubt)
