OK, I really want a screen door. Looks like there are 4 options, one from Ragusa, one from Applied GMC, a retractable screen door, and the floppy magnetic one.

I really would prefer one of the first two (curved to fit the main door). But it looks like they're a PIA to install/line up. Is it worth it?
Can anyone share their experience and tip me one way or the other -ease of installation, alignment etc.

thank you

Kelly,
Actually you have a 5th choice and that is to contact Bob Burkett and get a new Alex Birch style screen door.

We haven't been on the forum in a while but the screen door has now peaked our interest as we are considering putting an awning on our coach, 77 Kingsley. In researching the awning it appears that the top of the coach door rubs on the awning when the awning is in use. Zip Dee includes a roller to be attached at the top of the current coach entry door that is supposed to roll on the awning and protect it from constant rubbing of the door on the awning when the door is opened and closed. As a result we're considering a screen door to reduce the number of times the coach door is opened and closed when the awning is in use. However, do the screen doors also rub on the awning when opened and closed?

We appreciate any input those of you with awnings, screen doors, and how you view this problem and what solutions you have applied to address it.

Thanks as always in advance.

Side note - Coach, son and family including 4 kids are arriving at Disney World today, first long trip with coach and all is well so far. A slight problem with vapor lock but we're slowing getting that worked out.

I second Mickey's question.... what does one do about the rubbing of the screen door. (I am installing a birch door).

on my research on Screen Doors- What I have found-

#1 Ragusa door does not always fit, but are nice when working. (have heard a few people end up putting them in the box because they could not get them to work?)

#2 - Birch Door from Bob Burkitt - NO new doors- just support and parts for old doors.

#3 - roller/sliding screen door- flexsteel dinette by door, when folds interferes and that will not work- very nice on older non-flexsteel dinettes, and where you have just chairs on passenger side by door.

#4 magic door/magnetic screen door-- have seen very nice installs of those, but you do need to do some sewing and little bit of modifications to make it work really nice.

I would like to know of any alternatives that you mentioned that Applied might have now. Over a year ago, Jim K mentioned he was looking at an alternative.

I've a Ragusa coming off my new used coach - the dogs will go right through a screen so I can't use it. Sent Kelly a PM, she gets first refusal.

I think Bob B has a device to keep the dogs on the interior of the screen
door.

I've got a Ragusa - I'm not sure how long it had been on there before I bought the coach, but it was not lined up until I spend a lot of time re-doing it myself.

Having said that - we love it, it's great!

I'm getting the drift that screen doors that go on our coaches also rub on the awning. With 3 grand kids coming and going all day long I'm not liking the sound of the doors rubbing on the awning no matter how well the "rollers" or other devices might work that are supposed to protect the awning.

Has anyone had good luck with the magnetic screen doors. My wife sews and made the curtains that cover the interior of the windshield so we can deal with cut and sew modifications if necessary. I'm about to search for videos on the magnetic screen doors and their installation and operation reliability.

Has anyone addressed this already? Thanks again!

The boss wanted a screen door, and when I could not find a Birch, I bought a Ragusa door. It is sturdy and a nice door. However, you must keep in mind that each coach...believe it or not...settles a little different making the doorway different. So Ragusa makes the door to fit the middle of the road sag. So...while it only took me about 45 minutes to install it, and another two days of futzing with it to get it adjusted so that it would close without binding on something, for some it will take 45 minutes total and others a considerable amount of time. No way of knowing until you do the install. Just a heads up on this.

This is a JWID reply:

My wife wanted a screen door for her birthday several years ago. I purchased a Ragussa from Applied GMC. It is a well made door and, I think, the only one currently made to fit our coaches, as I don't believe Bob is producing new Birch doors at this time.

I am a general contractor and a carpenter by trade, and have hung many doors, so I consider myself kind of an expert at fitting doors to openings. This one was easy to install, but was not easy to adjust for a good fit. I finally got it to fit properly after doing some bending of the hinges, and adjusting of the mounts to the door, etc. It fits well and has given us zero problems ever since. The main issue, as it turned out, was the weather stripping that comes on the door. It needs to be cut down in order to fit inside the door frame without dragging and making the door hard to close.

As for the screen door, rubbing on the awning, it is smaller than the coach door. It HAS to be, in order to fit inside the door frame. So, rubbing is minimal and I have not found it to be an issue. I can adjust my Omnistor awning up fairly high, so that might make a difference for my application.

AH, thank you!

Where there's a will there's a way. This deals with the problem with both doors, outer and screen.

Someone made one out of wood too, IIRC. The only one I could find on my first search attempt of the photo site was the one made out of EMT.

I've made a bunch of stuff out of PVC as well although whether it is stiff enough might be a question. 1/2 inch would work. It's amazing what you can do with the PVC with a heat gun and carefully shaping it when it's pliable.

Bill Massey quickly offered one up for sale that I'll get and attempt an install

Thanks for all your suggestions. I asked the PO about the roller on top of the door and he said it was to prevent it from rubbing the awning if it's tilted all the way down- so I'll have to see how much of an issue it really is.

Seems an important part of the coach to me. I love screen doors.

And now that I know of the disappearing screens I might need some for my house

Get the wooden plate that wedge and pushes he awning up higher at the door
so the screen door does not rub on the fabric.
We stock them.

Another option is a sliding door glass with screen. Not as good as a full screen but does let in a breeze and you can talk to somebody outside.
