Here are a few best and worst for us so far.
Best time to be here - May and June. You are before the caravans, before the hordes of fisher people and before the worst of the mosquitos. Worst time to be here (according to locals) July and August. The place is over run with caravans, big motorhomes that won't fit anywhere, and 1-800-rent an RV rigs driven by people who have no clue where the bumpers or the mirrors are. And by folks who stop right in the middle of a 65 mph highway to gawk at and take pics of a seagull or a sparrow. The mosquitos are out with a vengeance then as well.
Best places to stay - Elks Clubs. Some are down right beautiful and all are in cities where you want to be, anyway. Always friendly and accommodating and filled with folks who know the local area well. We have never had a bum steer from anyone in an Elks Club here yet. Prices run from $15 to $25. The worst places to stay - the $50 - $60 per night heavily advertised RV parks. They are no better, just more expensive, usually out on the edges of towns where you want to be, and the staffs seem little interested in helping. They are all wound up for the next big caravan coming in. If you like to dry camp there are road turnouts all over the place. Pull in and stay the night for free.
Best weather - where you are right now. The weather changes so fast that it is hard to forecast and even harder to run from or run towards. So far the weather has been stunning everywhere. Worst weather - probably over the next mountain. You never know!
Most exciting places - most anywhere the road goes to the sea. Big name places like Homer, Seward, Valdez and Whittier all earn their reputations well. But, so do the lesser known and more out of the way places like Hope. Least exciting places (at least for us) - Tok and Anchorage. We have not yet been to Denali, Fairbanks or Dawson City so can't comment on any of those places.
