Anyone ever use a cable come along to lower just the trans/FD out of a GMC? I have an A frame for use inside to lower the engine/trans / FD out. Seems like that would be more stable then a floor jack. Decided to change the FD before going to Branson today. And as long as I'm pulling the FD. Might as well pull the trans. And rebuild it. Take me about an hour, and a half to rebuild it complete on the bench. As I have all the parts on hand now anyway.Bob Dunahugh78 Royale Mouse House.

I have always just used a floor jack. It is a little awkward but with two people it is easy to manage. The thing only weighs around 100 pounds (I think). I never actually weighed one.

What is wrong with your 307 going to Branson?

Bob,

The gantry is fine for dropping the transmission alone; I've helped Manny
do it in just a few minutes: One hoist supporting the engine. Another
connected to the transmission with a dual hook chain from the right side
vent hole, beneath the transmission and back over to the vent hole.
Disconnect the Final Drive and leave it attached to the axles. Remove the
3 bolts from the TC, disconnect the hoses & linkage, then the bell housing
bolts. Lower away.

BUT you're proposing to lower the FD still attached. That's going to be a
very "nose heavy" load. IIRC, in that case Manny uses a special lift chain
with a third end to attach to the front of the transmission. I don't have
the dimensions for that rig. Maybe Manny will tell you.

Bob,
This is what I used to drop the trans. The all thread holds the motor up

Ken. I've pulled the trans/FD with a floor jack before. It's the awkward part that I don't like. There's just got to be a safer/ simpler way to pull both at the same time. Thinking of making a jig to hook on to from the top. I've been a tool designer. Unbolt everything. Then lower the trans/FD onto a four caster dolly as one unit. Then simply roll out. One person, and no awkward issues. As to the 3:07. It's in fine condition. I just don't like how it performs as compared to the 3:70. With or without a toad. The other issue is that it takes a nice chunk of load, and heat out of the engine, and transmission. Helps keep me from having Linda in a wheelchair at the side of the road some day. Because with her in that wheelchair. Failure IS NOT an option. Ever. And at this point after 13 years of having a GMC. That has been the case. Not even once for any problem.Bob Dunahugh78 Royale Mouse House.

Never done one, but would a motorcycle or ATV jack help at all? Seems thats a larger landing surface for the parts and its on wheels.

Bob, when I dropped my tranny FD, I laid a 4x4 across the back of the hatch. Drilled some 9/16 holes above the empty holes on the rear of the heads. Welded some 1/2" washers to the ends of some 1/2" all thread and put some 3/8 bolts and washers through the hole in the 1/2" washer and into the heads. Then the 4x4 was slipped over the all thread and nuts were tightened to take the load of the block.

I used my engine trolly and chain fall to support and lower the tranny and used a come-a-long to support the FD and then lowered them both a bit at a time. MUCH easier with two people.

I've heard of people just doing the FD. Ken Henderson made some plastic gasket guards that will protect the gasket while the FD is wrestled into place and hung temporarily on some temporary studs. The plastic is removed and the studs replaced with the correct bolts once regular bolts take up the weight.
