I still running the break-in oil with about 500 miles on the rebuild. Using my infrared laser thermometer, I checked the temp this afternoon of my oil lines after a highway test run. With the engine still idling, I checked both lines at the fitting connection point where the solid lines connect with the flex lines. The upper line's temp (leading to the upper connection on the radiator oil cooler) was 188 degrees F. The lower line temp (leading to the lower connection on the radiator oil cooler) was 195 degrees. I was surprised that the lower line temp was more than the upper line. Is this normal?

Appreciate your input,

What was the radiator temp, did you look at it? The return line should be about the same as the coolant temp I think. The send line will be about the temp of the oil in the pan. I wouldn't think a 7 degree difference would be a concern either way.

The upper line is the one going from the filter to the oil cooler in the radiator. The lower line is the return line.
Normally you would expect the upper line to be hotter however at idle the flow rate of the oil is lower and the air flow going through the radiator is lower.
So it is possible times for the oil to pick up heat from the radiator coolant. At a higher RPM the temperatures could easily be reversed.

A 7 degree difference isn’t much and certainly nothing to be concerned about.
Your thermostat is likely 195 degrees so you coolant temperature was probably hotter than the engine oil temperature.

Emery,

Thanks for the information. Understood, however, I am running a 180 degree thermostat. It was a warm day and the coach was in the garage with no air circulation.

Even with a 180 degree thermostat the radiator can run hotter than that. The thermostat is just a valve that opens at 180. The temperature of the fluid going through it can be hotter.
On a hot day and no air circulation I am not surprised at the oil being 195.
