I know this has been discussed. I have searched the forums. I have esentially 2 questions for the experts. I blew a bag the other day on my 78 Royal. I've decided on the sully built bag system because I can build the brakets and get the recommended bags for $160 each. Question one: Is there really no bag that works in place of the original? Less range of adjustment, rides a little harder? If it's close I'm in. There are so many bags available, you would think something would work. Question two: I know I'm being cheap here but this thing is a money pit and I have other expensive hobbies. Since I'm building my own brackets is there another bag that might work. It seems there are lots of bags available for $50ish. I know nothing about bags so the spec sheets are a bit confusing. Thanks in advance for any wisdom you might have on this subject.

If you don't want to buy a straight replacement bag from Jim K,

http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/1430

you have already mapped out the least expensive path.
Next least expensive is to buy a set of SullyBilts.

Chris,
There is a direct replacement bag, however after two blew up shortly after
install and found it did not have the same amount of plies, we quit
supplying it.
We have the MONO Bag same as the Sully Bag, but comes complete with bag.
There are some things you need to know that does not show.
If your interested, call me and I will clue you in on them.

The Applied GMC version of the Sully-Built bags don't feature an offset that
the Sully bags have. This places the bags further away from the tires.

Chris,

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum....

Like Jim, I can't wait either but I also can't stand aside and just watch - it's just too cruel.

My Answers:
There is no bolt in for the original airspring. If there were JimK would be all over it. (He's one of the people here you should listen to.)
If there were another volume manufactured (as in a catalogue somewhere) part, someone would have discovered it by now.

Todd Sullivan designed the adapter plates and if you search the picture file, you should be able to find those. Be sure that is what you want to do. For what he charges, I can't buy the steel and make my own.

Be aware that this is a two sided forum, half is E-mail list and the other is internet forum. This makes a sigfile here all the more important as not everybody can see the header. If you go the Control Panel/Account Settings and scroll down, you can put in a sigfile. It is best if it has: Your real name - So others know who you are when you meet, a note about the coach (Year, model and major mods), because this may affect the advice because things were changed, And a geographic reference to allow someone that may like to assist will know if he is in striking range. This will serve you well as long as you are here.

And last, but not least, I am glad you found your way here. You just found a few thousand old friends that you didn't even know you had. The only way to annoy them is by asking too many questions.... <<< That can't happen!! But if you ask questions here you WILL get good answers and if you then ignore those answers, that will annoy them and they may stop giving you the good answers. These are wonderful supportive and helping people. This group is so much like the watermen that are my world, that I have taken up greeting new people here much as a new owner or vessel would be greeted there. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Welcome Chris

Matt

Jim,

Please do not continue to claim your COPY of the Sullybilt system is the
same as it is not. Also, I would appreciate it if you would remove that
verbiage from your website as it is misleading.

Thank you,

I bought the Sully system and installed it with a set of AirTech bags. I looked at the suggested AirTech and Firestone bags and they...on paper... spec'd out the same. Since they were the same and the AirTech's were somewhat less expensive than the Firestones, I opted for the AirTech's. When installed, it turns out that the AirTech's actually inflate to about 1" in diameter larger than the Firestones. As a result, they rubbed against the back wall of the wheel well. Sully was very good to me in that he built a set of brackets that were offset to the outside of the wheel well, and IIRC has incorporated this into the design of the Sully brackets. (Sully, correct me if I am wrong about this) This is important because in retrospect, if I had spent the extra to begin with on the firestones, I would not have had the rubbing issue. If you do this, stick with the firestone bags. Less chance you are going to have the interference issues.

I really like the Sully system. It was an easy install, requires much lower pressures (about 45lbs) , and I have found no difference in ride quality. JMHO

Larry,

There is an offset built into the Sullybilt kits in order to gain clearance
from the inner wheel well. This clearance in necessary to account for
variations in inside clearance between the rear suspension and the wheel
wells. Although the Air-Tech bags MIGHT fit I do not recommend them because
depending upon the coach they could rub the fender wells even with the
offset. This is due to the inflated diameter difference you noted between
the Firestone and Air-Tech bags.

Wow! Thanks guys for all the great info and for the welcome! I'm now leaning more towards just buying the sully built brackets. Seams they are more complicated than expected. Does anyone know if the Firestone bags need an adapter for the air hose?

I just bought brackets for one side from sully and an air bag from Amazon. I'll at least get this thing mobile again. Thanks very much for all the help.

Guy,
Maybe the first batch did not feature the off set, but we made the change
shortly after that and couple small change.
We have sold over 200 complete kit which comes with the Firestone bags.

Bryon,
That is the Chinese one that failed as the ply of cords were less than the
original and we had to refund them.
They were from Cinnabar.

Just bite the bullet and install the Sullybilt system with Firestone bags. I did it a few months ago and I found his system to be very robust, well thought out and extremely easy to install.
The big bags give an awesome ride and great range of height adjustment.

76 Eleganza mostly stock, Sully bags, needs one of everything.
