Several months ago we switched from Dish Network to Direct TV. We used to be able to take one of the Dish control boxes from the house and use them with our Winegard crank up dish on the roof of the coach. The new Direct TV DVR system is different. It has a DVR unit in the living room and a small unit in the bedroom. Am I right that the bedroom unit works in conjunction with the main unit in the living room and will not receive a signal on it's own? Or can I take the small unit with us to use with the crank up dish? It sure would be handy. I guess I could take it out to the coach and try it. but I thought I'd save myself the trouble and ask here first.

Used to have direct but now I have dish. From what I was told by dish and direct you can't use those little units in your rv they only work with the big unit.also if you get a unit from direct that will work those old crank up roof units in the rv only lock on to one satilite not three like my home dish one does.my Motorhome has an old weingard crank up on the roof which I have used for 20 + years it worked great with my old direct unit. When I went with dish instead of getting a Joey to go with my hopper I got a unit for the bedroom without a DVR that I could use in the Motorhome . I had to chose which satellite I wanted to use getting only half the channels. This past year I bought a refurbished King automatic portable dish that locks into the three satellites

The receivers are all in the main unit in the living room.
What's in the bedroom is a remote unit for the receiver. What goes through the coax is a low band signal that's digital, and is converted to HDMI in the box. It also picks up the remote commands and sends it back.

Okay guys, Thanks. That's how I thought the system worked. I guess if we really want Satellite TV on the road, we'll take the main unit out of the living room and search for whichever satellite gives us the channels we most want to watch. More likely, we'll just do what we've been doing and use the over the air antenna or watch DVDs. We haven't used the satellite dish for a few years since nost RV parks have cable hookups and we're usually pretty busy when we're dry camping.
Thanks again.

Carl & Robert
As for the best IMHO satellite system it is the Winegard Carryout G2+. I have several friends who have this system and it takes less than 10 minutes to be up and running, they love it after drawing around a dish to set up at each location. It can supply 2 receivers and can be mounted on top of the coach or on a removable mount. We are seriously considering this unit with Dish and they have the pay as you go no contract service. This antenna will work with Direct and Dish and several others, you just have to change the dip switch.

I am not getting into a contest on who is best only making a comment on the way we may go.

I believe you can get all the chanels (non HD) with the single LNB Direct dish. Looking at multiple satellites is only necessary for HD when using Direct service. Dish is nice in that you only need the single LNB to get HD, and their dish can be built smaller because it only needs the reflection of one sattelite at a time. If you're interrested in in-motion satellite only Dish can do it in HD.
Dish seems to have changed directions in the past few years and looks to be more RV friendly than in the past.
I've no dog in this fight and have used Direct from the late 1990's but would certainly check pricing in todays market before making a final choice.

Good info guys. Thanks. I guess we'll look into the mobile systems when we get closer to retirement and can spend extended periods in the coach. I know they are coming with better programs for RVs every year. Meanwhile, we'll use the dvd player in our TV and the King Jack antenna whenever there is not cable available.
