When lat out, the driver (Mary) reported to the engineer (me) that the engine temperature was down again where it used to run. That was about 160°F. I changed out that thermostat a year or two ago. Now it was there again. So, I drained a gallon of coolant, removed the T'stat (it was closed) and did the pot-on-stove test. It opened at about 160°!

This was a first for me.
I have had them fail open and fail to open even in boiling water. But this was new.

Auto Zone had one.

What brand drifted low and what brand did you go with? I put a Stant Super Stat in my Tahoe as the old stat would cycle up and down at cruise overshooting on both low and high. Tapered pintle type is supposed to be more exact and so far is

John,

What I put in was AZ's stock part aka Duralast. Notable by the three braces in the outlet, I can't identify the manufacturer.
The one that failed, I don't know. I think that the original package is in the coach. I will look tomorrow.

The Superstat is a 3 legged type so the one you got Could be one reboxed. Has the pintle design sort of like an EFI IAC valve. Their adverts say 'more flow and more accurate throttling' or something to that effect.

John,
That could easily be it.
And Yes, I put a 190 (actually labeled 192~195) back in. We will see how it goes on the run to the GMCES Work Rally.

Gene,

I value what you have written, and usually heed it.
The problem was two fold, Jim Bounds has seen a number of Robert Shaws fail by breaking supports and there were none locally available.

No problem, MONDELLO would not warranty engine if you used a stat

A stat will only make your engine run hotter,
It cannot cool, I run my 3 GMCs with no stats to fail
😀😀

Mondello requires that you run a restrictor plate instead of a thermostat which they provide with the motors that they build. At the fall 2010 GMCMI convention in DuQuoin, IL I was parked next to Joe Mondello in the Vendors area. Really a good guy with tremendous knowledge, it was a shame that he died shortly after. Joes put a seminar on building an Olds motor. He talked about his thoughts on not using a thermostat, but using a coolant restrictor plate instead. His comments were that you needed to use some sort of restriction at that point or your motor would never get to a reasonable operating temp. The coolant needs to slow down a little bit in order for it to pick up the heat generated. A number of years ago here on the GMCnet we had this same discussion and Emory provided a quick tutorial on thermodynamics. I will let him comment on this.
