Those work well for cars where the cig lighter is hot all the time and the car is parked outside. On a lot of the new cars the 12vdc power port (no longer called a cig lighter) is only hot when the self start is in the on position. BMW changed over a couple of years ago so made those chargers that plug into the power port no longer functional. A lot of cars now have a dedicated post under the hood that connects to B+ after communicating with the on board electronic controller. Another dedicated post runs to B - so you never actually get near the battery itself. It is often now in the rear for weight distribution.

The small, inexpensive battery tender type units would likely work but no telling how the on board electronic controller would react to a constant low amp input over a protracted period of time. These newer units shut down once the battery is fully charged and only turn back on again when a minute voltage drop is sensed. I easily could have used one of the smaller CTEK units or Genius for this purpose, but I wanted a unit that could also be used as a 12vdc power supply as well.

I should have added that some manufacturers including VW recognize the problem and add a solar charger that sits in the front window so vehicles will
not go dead while sitting in a lot or in transit for an extended length of time. These are removed before delivery to the customer and have been
available for years on eBay and other locations. They do the job as long as the vehicle is parked outside. I put one in my brother's Honda while it
was parked for over 3 months because he was is a rehab nursing home after having a leg removed.

I have not tried this one:

For cars where the cigarette light is not hot all the time, they make a version that plugs into the OBD2 port instead.
