This advice is free. Remember what you paid for it. If there is no evidence
of leaks at the seals, and close inspection reveals that the seal lips are
still sharp and pliable, it is very likely that that what is installed is
better than what you bought to replace them with. The real issue will be
with the cover gasket that replaces the original. The best one currently
available is a two piece sandwich. One piece has a maze or labyrinth, the
other piece does not. They assemble in a certain order and are usually
stapled together. Do not use silicone sealant to assemble the cover to the
final drive. After the 10 bolts are tightened, use a 1/8" diameter drill
bit held between the thumb and forefinger and twirl it through the already
drilled hole in the top of the cover. This vents the labyrinth to the
atmosphere and prevents the shift seals from leaking. Just what I do.

Like Jim H mentioned, the vent holes are important.
The one on the Driver side is baffled and has 2 small vent holes.
The one on the passanger side is non vented.
There are meel covers that have fill holes located higher up than normal
and when filled to that level will cause lub to weap out of the vent holes.
We have been doing these final drive units since 1993 and learned from the
best people that have now past away.
We now have a limited slip unit that has proven to be a great option in the
past few years along with or 3.55,3.70, and 4.10.
Strongly suggest you replace the pinion bearings as the old units are
having problems there.
