I have an extra drain plug in the upper front of the 455 engine in the area that retains a little oil when draining the oil by removing the stock drain plug. The 1/2 - 20 stock drain plug isn't large enough to drill and tap for a temperature sender. The extra drain plug is larger. I want to drill and tap the extra plug to install the oil temp sending unit. Does anyone know the distance in that area from the pan to the crankshaft? I could measure it but it wouldn't be easy. Hopefully, someone can save me the time and has the dimension. Ken Henderson? Jim Hupy? Anyone?

Tom, without knowing exactly where the plug is located front to rear, my
solution would be to remove plug, probe the hole. I have seen more than one
shape to the pans as well.

Jim,
You're right. I'm going to have to position the crank so it is down over the extra drain plug hole, drain the oil and take a measurement.

Tom,
Oil coming out of the cooler is at the temperature that the bearings will see. You could tee into the oil line coming out of the cooler or into the filter adapter and install the temp probe there. Added benefit, no messing with the probe and wire when you drain the oil.
