8D AGMs are heavy and they are expensive, but they can go anywhere in any orientation, even inside the living areas of the coach like under the forward dinette seat in a Royale, or under the bed in a converted-to-permanent-bed GMC interior, or, or, or……

They allow you to balance weight both side to side and front to back far more easily than using wet cell chemistry. And, they don’t off gas hydrogen, so pose no explosion risk. And, you can put any other electrical components in the same location, even on top of them (where I have the Samlex inverter in the Clasco) without harm. That is why the military helped develop the technology and why they like them so much (besides paying for them with your money! grin). I had to really scramble to find a way to offset the side weight of the four 6vdc golf cart batteries I put in the PS rear compartment on the Royale several years ago. I could easily have center mounted two 8D AGMs in the compartment under the center of the rear lounge and left the PS compartment open for whatever. Sitting in the center of the rear they only would have influenced the front to rear balance, the easiest to manage via air pressure in your bags.

You can roll them around on a furniture moving dolly and only have to deal with all that weight when grunting them into final position. No harder than trying to lift batteries in beside the generator like I did with the 4D AGM I installed in the Clasco when we picked it up in FL. If/when I decide to replace that one I will put one or two 8Ds under the bed, (if two, one stacked on top of the other the way I have that rear compartment configured). I only have to roll it/them into place once. By the time they die I will be long out of GMCing anyway and LiIon technology will likely be available at more reasonable prices.

BTW, I really like the look of those Volt battery units someone showed recently…..if we knew how to properly charge them. Watch out before wading in that pond. Lots of smart people have spent lots of hours and $$$ figuring out to make that chemistry live in a vehicle. Guess why Toyota was so late into the LiIon game. It certainly was not from lack of engineering talent or knowledge…...

So, from my POV the weight and cost issues associated with 8D AGMs are far overshadowed by the benefits. But, everyone has to make those tradeoff choices for themselves. that is why GMCing is so much fun!

I bought a used Lifeline 8D on craigslist back in 2010. It finally gave up the funk last year and will be replacing it with 3 group 31 agms, I found
brand new on craigs list. 8d batteries are great for capacity, but a real bitch to move since they weigh about 165 pounds!
