a while back my Onan stopped putting out power, the motor runs great but is not generating any juice. I replaced the BR, but still no luck. so I checked the field winding and according to the manual it should have over 30 ohms of resistance. well im not showing any, so im guessing it developed an open circuit. i'd like to get the green beast putting out power again by summer. Ideas?

It should have something like 28 ohms between F1 and F2. A real big number of ohms from each field connector to the case. Low number of ohms from either field connector to case is fatal (short circuited field). Big number between F1 and F2 is fatal (open circuited field).

If the field is either short circuited or open circuited, contact Jim Miller and see what he says.

Yeah im not getting any reading at all between the leads. Where are they likely to fail? Also is it easy to rewind or replace? Looks like the whole unit will have to come out....

If the field is an open circuit, it will have to be rewound. It is not easy to rewind or replace. The unit will have to come out and come apart. Then, if Jim Miller is rewinding them, you might have to ship the stator to him in Hamilton, OH so he can rewind it. He is in the blacklist.

FWIW, he replaces the aluminum windings with copper and does a lot better job of insulating them against damage and corrosion, so they will last longer than original.

think I'll drop him a line and see what he charges to do that...
