So I had a little, uh, "incident" last summer with the Onan. (Note to self: Do NOT leave the oil cap off the generator and then start it.) I had an oily mess on the Onan that then attracted all sorts of dust, with the result being a mess of oily dirt in about every crack and crevice on the left side that would be much easier to remove with engine degreaser and a hose. But I've heard that you're not supposed to spray the generator with water, so does anyone have any suggestions on how to effectively clean it up without damaging it?

Simple Green is a good grease remover.
You can rinse the generator with water.
But not while it's running... Very Happy
Brake cleaner will work also.

Very carefully!

Thanks for the tip, Harry. Not wanting to tempt fate with water, I ended up using a compressor to blow all of the loose dirt/oil off of it, and then sprayed the difficult areas with brake cleaner. Looks much better now.

I'm gonna give the air blast/degrease a try on the one I was given. It's encrusted with the crud you'd expect after a 40 year sojourn in the generator bay.

I think if you cover the ignition/carb/control board wiring you should be
fine with engine degreaser and water/brush Johnny. Then maybe
clean/dry/coat the junction plug ends for the control board with the crc
-26 stuff Duane Simmons recommended. Run the gen loaded for awhile to heat
it up and get any cleaning water vapor out and change the oil.

Also be very careful you don't spray any water into the the generator located at the rear of the engine.

Good point Emery. Maybe chase the standing water out of everything with
compressed air when done cleaning and prior to starting.

I think that you go back and look at Duane’s video the proper cleaning techniques he says DO NOT use water when cleaning up your Onan. I have always cleaned the several onans that I have owned with Brake Clean, cleaning brush and rags. If you get water into the generator area you can really screw things up.

I don't know if this one runs or when it last ran. However, the plan is to take off the tinwork, bag the alternator and starter and carb, and Gunk <tm>the engine and wash it off with hot water and then air blow - dry. This is done with the engine board and associated wires off the set. (It gets a different cleaning and setup later). I miss the heated agitated degreasers at Mac's, and the vapor degreaser set in the floor at the gin shop. Parts came out of them looking new and ready for paint. I don't think the solvents (HydroSeal Gunk for ferrous and a powder that made a caustic dip for non-ferrous) are even available any more, much to the environment's benefit. Some of that stuff was vicious.

About the best that we can do for hot tanks today is Cascade Dishwasher
Detergent. I have a 250 gallon hot tank that I no longer use because the
caustic soap for it is no longer available. S and J engines in Spokane have
an industrial oven that heats engine blocks and other iron parts to 500° F
or so. It turns scale and grease to dust, then parts are pressure washed
and dried with compressed air. The iron parts look new.
That kind of heat would probably render a generator unusable. Elbow grease
and brake kleen is about the best bet for onan generators. It is what I do.
Go easy on the circuit boards though. What Dwayne Simmons said on the
connectors works well.

I used WD 40 on the engine side and mounting tray.

Brian, "Brake Kleen" is a brand name for a product that comes in aerosol
cans as well as larger containers that are non aerosol. It is NOT a product
that contains tricloroeteheylene or other quite harmful solvents. It
evaporates fairly quickly and leaves no residue. Safe to use on brake parts
and general degreasing. Does not work particularly well on carbs. It may
not be a Midwest or east coast product. Common here on the West Coast. Just
what I use. Do NOT CLEAN PARTS IN BRAKE FLUID.

JimH, I remove the paint and conformal coating off the boards, replace the caps and diodes at a minimum, rebuild the traces that have overheated, burnish the blades and repair any that are loose, and then recoat the board. If necessary, make up a new harness up to the 12 pin Molex<tm>. The Molex is the most expensive part, but Skycraft usually has them and their pins on the shelf so I get a few each time I'm around The Mouse. The blade connectors and electronic parts are available for pennies from the Heathen Chinese on Ebay. Purely an exercise to keep my skills and eye-hand coordination going, the economic repair is go buy one from Dinosaur if your time has value.

Years ago I used to have a side job assembling integrated circuit boards by
installing wire harnesses and chips as well as other components to them.
Techtronics was the owner of the boards. I did not know what the final use
was. They provided a yes/no test fixture that we plugged the harness into
and ran a series of tests. All the components were soldered by hand and
then clipped and cleaned. Fine work under 10 power magnification. Fussy
client. Time constraints dictated that one work efficiently. I know what
you mean by "keeping your head and hand into the game". I have been out of
my shop since December, and Wednesday I picked up my wire feeder and
welded some torsion bar tools. Not the prettiest job I have ever done,
little rusty, am I.

That's TekTronics, with a 'K'. Oscilloscope and swept analyzer maker. Standard comment on test instruments, "There's Tek, and there's everybody else".

Yes, I know how to spell it. It is my Korean Samsung cellular telephone
that does not. It can't even learn how to spell GMC ( calls it GOD) or Judy
(calls her july) or Hupy. (Calls me Huey) you have no idea how many text
messages this phone has changed the meaning and intent of. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh,
technology, ain't it great?

Can't you turn off "Spell Correct" and replace with "Spell Check"
that doesn't mess things up? My iPhone has "spell check!"
