I've always had trouble keeping the lip of the big end of the outer boot grease free so it will clamp properly. Here's how I solved the problem that may be of interest.

With the axle positioned vertically and the outer joint down, turn the new boot inside out, pack just the joint with as much grease as it will hold keeping it away from the boot and the outer flange of the joint. Slide the inverted boot down against the joint, invert the clean and dry end over the clean and dry joint housing and clamp it. Put the rest of the grease packet plus an additional packet in a "suction gun", put the output tube of the gun under the small end of the boot and inject the grease. Position and clamp the small end and you're done. No mess and the big end of the boot will stay in place.

Cut the suction gun tube short to minimize the amount of grease that will stay in the tube. The extra packet of grease is to allow for what won't come out of the gun or tube.
