Nick Chepeckis has had one on for several years now and just did the other side. I am pretty sure it was a Dorman part.

After using them on several vehicles a number of years ago, I've come to think of them as a temp solution to just get you home. Especially the ones that glue together. They must be kept squeaky clean in order for the glue to adhere properly....something that is VERY difficult to do with all of that CV grease and dirt typically in that area of the coach. Unless you are in a bind for time or money, do it right the first time and don't use the split boot. In the end it will pay in time and labor. JMHO

If you do a great job of gluing them, they will hold up for few years or
several miles.

I've had excellent luck with them in the past on VWs, but the ones I used had a metal strip down each side of the split. Rubber and metal were punched, and they used about eight #2 screws with locks and flats on the strips. No experience with 'glue together' ones. Before someone asks, this was in the 60s - 70s, I've no idea if they're still available, but some of the old Bug sites might have a libne to the maker.

Johnny the ones I just bought for a v dub dune buggy are OEM type from Germany they don't have metal strips are you saying I should fabricate metal strips before installing them?

If I were still VWing, I'd look for the ones which were designed for the strips. The rubber is thinner where it joins, and there's a molded recession to hold the strips correctly. The downside is, they're consequently a bit wider in diameter because of the strips, and thus might not clear on a GMC.

I used the ones that screw together. I figured I'd try a split boot since it eliminated having to remove the axle to install. No tears and still holding grease after four years on one, two years on the other. I originally replaced using the non-split variety and they never lasted more than a year or two (ordered them directly from Jim K).
