Good morning gents and ladies,
Just trying to determine if the oil filter on the 455 drains back to the pan after shutdown , I've heard yes an no , if yes, would a filter with anti drain back prevent this. Just curious

Take a look at the filter mounted on the motor.the oil can't drain uphill if it has a check valve or not logicly speaking that is.

Good ideal how to get the oil out of the front. Just curious how much oil is suppose to be in pan after a normal change of 6 qts even though I heard it said to only use 5 since one left in front. I made a dipstick with inch marks and have the exact measurements from bottom of pan for each qt added if anyone's interested .

Emery,
I agree. It's really not worth all the trouble and expense just to try to
eliminate less than 1 qt. of old oil
But for those really curious, here's the pan:

Ken & Emery,
In principle I agree but when my pedantic anally retentive perfectionist streak kicks in I reckon if for any you have the engine out
or need to replace the oil pan gasket then here's the fix:

For what it's worth I have added a second drain in my pan but with my newly built engine I added 6 quarts to the fresh engine and calibrated the dip stick to read full with a full oil filter. Started the engine with a new external oil cooler and lines. It took an extra 1 1/2 quarts to fill these lines and cooler . So when the oil is drained and the filter is changed there is going to be 1 1/2 quarts still in the lines that won't come out.

The ACDelco PF30 fit the Olds. The ACDelco PF24 was the same form factor but with anti drainback flapper as the Buick filters mount sideways and DO need an anti drainback. You could use either on the Olds but only the PF24 on Buick 350- 400-430-455. I believe the PF30 is DISCO and superceeded by PF24 for both apps.

The ACDelco PF24 crosses to the WIX 51258 (And the 6k Onan is a WIX 51762 while you are at it๐)

When you change oil on any vehicle you never get it all out because of valleys by lifters, on heads etc. It is the dilution principle with any fluid change. If you want your fluids cleaner, then just increase the drain /fill frequency. After an oil change I can barely see it's level on that super skinny dipstick anyway and wish it had some color! Adding any extra plumbing to the oil system, by definition, adds addtional possible failure points. How many engines have died by the old plumbed line guages that failed and let the oil out or stacked senders where the leverage cracked the fitting.
