If I had an Onan and needed a choke, I'd be buying these:

Ken

How do you propose wiring it so that it will turn itself off?

The Onan choke has a thermostat built in that interrupts the current.

The hard to find Onan choke actuator occasionally pops up on eBay. I just got my latest one for $45 & free shipping for a genuine Onan part.

There is also the possibility that a Sisson choke from an early dodge might work. Although I can't 100% confirm it as I haven't tried one, the dodge choke actuator looks as though all we need to do is swap the lever from the Onan. The dodge chokes pop up on eBay regularly with asking prices from $35 up to $150+. Just search "Sisson choke"

If wanting to try a dodge unit, be aware that several different configurations exist and only one of them is close enough to appear suitable. Check and compare the unit closely with your Onan choke before buying. Also note that there are 6v and 12v versions.

I don't recall how Ted Stinnett did it with the rotary solenoid, but there
are a number of possibilities. The simplest, and probably what I'd do, is
to just use it as a manual choke: Wire it through a SPST push button & use
that like a pull choke. For those insisting on automatic, a thermal switch
(Surplus Sales probably has several) mounted to a manifold bolt should
suffice.

Ken,

Why not just wire it in parallel with the starter solenoid? Once the Onan
lights off it doesn't seem to need a choke. I went for years with a
non-operational
choke. Just pulled it closed for the first start of the day and it was
good.
Then I bought a new choke. When I pulled the old one off, I discovered
that it was good and just needed a ground. So I took Emery Stora's
advice and added a ground wire. Voila!!! Instant choke.

Ken's manual driver operated button - simple. Design a simple Ardunio with temperature sensor - complicated.

Gary,

That's what I'm doing with the TroyBilt generator I'm now using. I found
that the lowest psi electric pump I could find still defeated the float on
the B&S and caused flooding. When I finally got it running properly with a
crankcase pulsation driven pump, I connected that electric pump to the
starter for enrichment. The B&S's never yet failed to start promptly. I
gave up the idea of using a solenoid to operate a "choke".

Where is that fix documented? I think mine needs to be grounded. I saw sparks around the choke linkage when I started the Onan a few weeks ago.

Never mind. I found it here:

Pictures would have been good, but this is enough to figure it out.
