The Onan is finally running!! I installed a new choke assembly and it fired right of and runs great!!

One weird thing is, the start switch on the inside lights up when the generator is running and you can shut the generator off with the switch but not start it?

The PO had all kinds of wiring in this coach, so who knows?

If you have any ideas let me know?

Thanks,

Steve

Sounds like some "creative wiring" for the Onan remote. Get the scheme from bdub's site and correct the wiring. I also suggest that you do not put a lot of trust in the wire color on each end of the run. People have been known to splice in anything that Ty had on hand. A coach that I helped on, to cross the engine compartment, the P.O. Has spliced in about 6 short sections of wire, with different gauges and colors. The saving grace was we could see the entire run of wire.

Switch contacts corroded. Connector contacts corroded. Broken wire.

The switch on the remote panel does the same thing as the switch on the board, just longer wires. So the problem is almost certainly a simple continuity problem. Reseat the connectors at the switch. There is a multi-pin connector in the generator compartment in the circuit that goes from the board to the remote panel. I would bet lunch money there is corrosion in that connector. Disconnect and reconnect it a few times to scrape off the corrosion. This is the second time in a couple weeks that this has been asked.

Don't just replace with any kind of connector, use a weather proof connector like the one below from McMaster Carr.

Steve,

I'm not sure why I am wrote this were Mr. Applied Air Filters is likely to read it, but I did, so hang on.....

If your selected handle is any indicator then I hope you know about the danger of a K&N air filter. If they are not cleaned and re-oiled very regularly, the failure mode is a marked trapped particle size increase. In a translation to "normal human" this means that the smallest trapped particles are now larger and more smaller particles go right one through. This is the opposite of what a paper element normally does. As the particles trap in a dry filter media, the passages actually get small and the filtration gets better. The downside is that the filter depression (restriction) also increases.

I know about this from working warranty at Jeep. I disallowed the warranty for engine failures on three different engines. All three had been fit with K&N air filters that I have to assume (hope) were not properly maintained. One of them was installed dry and run that way. All three required the replacement of both the cylinder block/crankcase and cylinder head assemblies.

So, Now that you finally got the beast running, if you want to use it much at all, be real ready to service that air filter very often.

(Jim, if I got something wrong, please say so...)

Matt
