Just plain old gray grounders; and the bit about not too particular about staying close to ground is absolutely true; they will climb through and or on any thing to get above it all. But, what kind of flower tastes, smells and/or burns like red pepper?

Lucky you, our squirrels love red pepper. What kind of squirrels are you
trying to keep out?
Ours are the gray ground squirrels. They are not all that particular
about being ground squirrels, though. And they love red pepper flavored
flowers.

The flowers don't taste like red pepper until you dust them with it.
Except for late season Nasturtium leaves and blossoms. They are quite
spicy. Early leaves and flowers are tasty in my salad. but we don't get
any seeds to plant next year when they eat the blossoms.
Those darned squirrels like the taste of the flowers and the taste of
the red pepper stuff. Rob must be right, wetback squirrels, even though
we're about 1200 miles North of that border.
We did get a solution to the squirrel problem near the house, but we had
to give up our bird feeders. My wife's cousin gave us 2 cute kittens
which grew up. Now we have a mouse and shrew problem in the house.
Sometimes live ones that got away, and sometimes only uneaten parts of
them. Just can't win!
The cats didn't deter those darned packrats, though. We'd trap and
relocate one, and another would move in. Caught that one, and another
moved in. they're solitary critters except at breeding and baby rearing
time. The LED attic lighting solved that problem though.
