I wonder if it works:

Looks similar to a TDS tester.

I seem to recall reading somewhere how to use a VOM to test for moisture in brake fluid. That obviously would require knowing what good fluid has as a resistance vs fluid with excessive moisture.

Thinking about this in more detail. I'm having trouble seeing how a resistance test would work with any accuracy since the mineral & metal content of the fluid would skew the readings. No two fluid brands will be identical, and old fluid in a vehicle can possibly have more than just moisture contaminates in it. I guess the type of contaminate isn't really of great concern. If the tester reads high, one can safely assume that the fluid needs replacement irregardless of what is causing the high reading.

Picked off the web....

"Not always. And while there are test strips to test the moisture content, here is a method that works just as well. Use your DMM (Digital Multimeter) to test the fluid! The procedure is easy enough. Hook up your negative meter lead to the negative battery post, and then insert your positive meter lead into the brake fluid while avoiding contact with the reservoir itself. Any reading over 0.30 volts is too much, and the fluid should be flushed. This test is a result of an SAE paper showing a distinct relationship between moisture content and the voltage measured. It is also a great demo to share with your customer when selling the repair!"

This is what I found. That does not mean that I think that the test is valid. There are way too many variables that are not accounted for. For starters, I don't know where the 0.3V comes from. If there is anything like that stray in the braking system, then electrolytic corrosion is going to run away.

I am going to try to research this more. In the mean time, I may try to acquire one of these.

Ken.
I have a similar moisture meter for brake fluid. I put it into a brake system with new fluid and it says things are O K. Older brake fluid 3 to 4 years old it will show differing levels of moisture depending on vehicle. On cars that are 1 or 2 years old it shows kind of OK.

The question about it working is dificult to say but it seems to follow what I would expect. (I dont have the resouces to calibrate it) One thing is for sure. If it says fluid is bad, I flush the system. It defiantly is a convincing indicator to do the job. (For customer work it stopped arguments because it became a non emotional indicator)

I think it is worth the 10 bux.

But what do I know?
Regards.
