A project in my shop has forced me to relocate my GMC to the outside yard. I'm in NE Florida, so no issues other than squirrels and their cousins possible relocation to my engine bay. What works to keep them out? I heard pure peppermint oil soaked cotton balls. Anyone try this? Thanks and Happy Holidays.

An *extremely* old bump… But I wanted to send an update on my rodent situation from this winter… I've always had mice on my batteries (front and back), on top of the Onan and on top of the intake manifold of the engine.
This season, I put down moth balls near these spots and no longer see *any* evidence of rodents. Hard to say if it would work universally or not - but I wanted to update the thread with my empirical findings...

Rob,
I too have used Mothballs for rodent control too and it works very well, I have also used Mint Tea Bags with similar results. While I was at our local ACE hardware yesterday they were selling new device for packrats which are more abundant in the southwest part of the U.S.. It consist of a small but bright flashing strobe light assembly. In testing it drives out the little critters as they are nocturnal and they don’t like the bright flashing lights. Haven’t tried it myself, but it may be a solution if you have packrats issues.

I believe some folks have reported success keeping packrats out by
having LED "rope lights" stretched out under their coaches.
You'd probably need to have solar or other electricity source to
keep from running batteries down.

I had a professional pest person tell me he would just go to costco or sam's and buy a couple of containers of large crushed red pepper flakes and sprinkle everywhere. It not only worked but has since eliminated squirrels in attics, etc..

Even a dim light ( a couple of LEDs will keep the packrats (hairy tailed
wood rats) away. We had a problem in our attic and a storage area. One
40 w equivalent LED bulbs in each room of the storage building and a long
rope light string in the attic has kept them away. Less than the 40 watt
equiv. would work, but i couldn't find any at the time, and Costco had a
sale on the 40w equiv.
Other rodents are not that particular about light, and might just use the
illumination so they can find something to chew up.

Lucky you, our squirrels love red pepper. What kind of squirrels are you
trying to keep out?
Ours are the gray ground squirrels. They are not all that particular
about being ground squirrels, though. And they love red pepper flavored
flowers.
