I'm putting the rear brakes back together but do not have a real clear picture of how they go.
Can someone lead me to a photo of these?
It's a 1973 model.
Thank you.

David,
Do you have access to Rob's excellent reproductions of the 75-76
Maintenance Manual? If so, page 5-19, Fig 11 is an excellent illustrated
parts breakdown. Page 5-24, Fig 29 is an excellent photo of the brake
assembly.
I don't think there are any significant differences from the '73.
If you don't have them, I'll send them to you off-line.

Ken,
The manuals were mine but Peer Schmidt did the scanning.

Good picture, John.
As it says, it is the passenger side. The driver’s side would be reversed.
For those doing their own work. Servo and self-energizing action is produced by the hooking the heel
of the primary shoe to the toe of the secondary shoe. When the wheel
cylinder forces the top ends of the shoes out against the drum, the
forward shoe will tend to stick to the revolving brake drum and be
carried around with it. As the primary shoe attempts to revolve, it
will jam the secondary shoe against the single anchor pin. This
stops both shoes and produces a binding effect that actually helps
the brakes shoes apply themselves. This servo and self-energizing
action reduces the amount of pedal pressure necessary.
The primary shoe on self-energizing brakes generally
has a smaller amount of lining. The primary lining is usually also
of a different composition. The secondary shoe does more of the
braking, and less is needed on the primary shoe.
The secondary shoe always faces the rear of the vehicle.
If the shoes are accidentally reversed, there will be adverse wear,
more pedal pressure required and poor braking.
So, if any of you are doing your own brake work, remember "Big pad to Back”.

Jim's suggestion to photograph before disassembly is a lifesaver. Helps me figure out where everything started out and gets it back where it belongs. P.O. Did strange stuff, and I seem to send an inordinate amount of time trying to see where he went with his improvements.

This is the sort help I always expect to see here, and Emery's long shoe to the rear is something I was taught years ago. Even with 50(+/-) years doing drum breaks, those self adjusters are still confound me. Last spring when I got them all bollixed up. I found the picture that I had taken (I take a lot), but it was for the wrong side, so was the picture in the manual. So, I grabed it up with my picture fixer and printed the mirror of it. Then I went back out to finish the job.

James Hupy wrote on Sun, 13 March 2016 12:28David, what you might find helpful upon reassembly of complex mechanisms like brakes is a series of pictures taken with your cell phone before you take them apart. This will help you to remember how they were assembled, not necessarily the way that they should have been assembled. On 40 year old stuff, others have been there before you.

Tom,
I don't have to do that as I am blessed with a pornographic memory! :-)
