I recently took a trip with a friend who was using his smartphone app for GPS. He was raving about it. it is called WAZE and available on Apple and Android. In addition to normal GPS routing, it allows input from members and alerts. For instance, you get caught in a traffic jam, wreck, stalled car, or see a speed trap and you press a button that warns others. Others run into the same thing, they press a button to say it's still there. As you're driving you hear "Watch out, wreck reported ahead", etc.

It worked pretty slick and I decided to download it. At least until I was notified it wanted access to my: Identity, calendar, contacts, location, SMS, photos/files, camera, microphone, device ID and call info.

I backed out at this point. I can't imagine why they would NEED access to my photos and files, camera, microphone, calendar, contacts, etc. I don't like the idea that SOMEONE COULD listen or watch without my knowledge.

Am I being overly paranoid?

Because the want you to talk to it, take photos of wrecks, and let everyone
know when you will be getting there.

I used to love it, but it gets worse every release, I'm starting to think
about a new navigation app. It is still great for traffic.

Kerry,

Take a look at Sygic I have it on my Samsung phone and it works well. The maps are on your device not in the "cloud."

Kerry, I use Waze, a lot, the calendar function is my favorite, I have t travel to multiple Projects in and around NYC, Waze looks at your appointment, specifically the time and location, it will tell you when you should leave to attend meeting, even adjust for traffic. I drank the koolaid long ago. My other favorite is, "watch out, road kill reported ahead"

If you have a Windows 10 phone with internal GPS, CoPilot app works very nicely. The maps reside on your phone. Down load the area you need for free.
Not many Windows phone out there, but mine works fine as an unlocked GSM, running under the TracFone brand. Actual network used is AT&T 4Glte.

Keeping in mind that if you are running a Windows 10 device - you've already agreed to a EULA that gives Microsoft full access to ALL of your data. Not just the ones that are listed in an Android app…

Just sayin'...

If you use your Android phone for anything else besides the phone you probably have already given all those permissions in some other app. Google uses the info to steer advertisers to your interest, location, etc thus letting you have the app for free. Hate giving that info up, but it sure makes searches etc zero in on what and where much faster. I use run keeper just to time my walks, but it asks for all the same info.

typical of new apps. how else could they give you all these features and support for "free". Privacy is the new price for technology.

By following basic instructions on the web - available at several good trusted sites, you can turn off all of the MS "spy" stuff. Any cell phone, even "burners", can be tracked to their current cell tower by their unique ID. Only way not to be followed, is turn it off and put it in a RF shielded container, or remove the battery and deny it electrons.

Watch "Through the Wormhole" season 7 episode 2 subtitled "Is Privacy Dead?". Pay particular attention to the segment that is intro'd with "...Today, in real life, there's a different watchful eye we should worry about - big business."

I am using Sygic also. It can be used all over the world. The only nuisance for me is when you cross a border, state or country, you need to download a new map. So far I do not have any complaints. But, I do not travel as much as some of these folks do.

Another app to consider is OsmAnd, both versions available for iOS and Android.

Not completely free, but very nice and offline maps.
Also for walking, hiking and cycling.
During our Canada / USA Trip last june it came in very helpfull.

My first means of navigation is still Garmin for car, MH and motorcycle.
I make my own POI (Points of Interest) and put them on the device.
Further there are many places on the web were you can obtain POI for several items.

Another app one could consider, and I have it installed on my iPad, is AllStays Camp&RV.
It came in very handy this last vacationtrip Smile

Some more apps: Sanidumps, RV Parks, Live Street View, Parkfinder, Park Guides, RV Parky, KOA, GS Camping, Pasport America, ATM Hunter.

One to mention separately, is POIViewer. I love it. You "feed" it with the POI-File(s) you want, can activate one or more of them, and POIViewer will project them on a Googlemap, so you have a quick detailed overview (for the map it needs internetaccess)

Does there exist a POI-File for the "Blacklist" also ?
