...on the road. Things are going ok, but I am monitoring an exhaust leak.

Just for added adventure, the coach decided to alert my senses to the very real need to stop. The brakes are a bit soft, checked the fluid and it's leaking from the base of the master cylinder at the mount to the booster. Will monitor it closely, as I can not bleed the system single handedly.

Watch that exhaust leak. I think I came close to burning mine up during my initial trip. Exhaust leak burned away a good chunk of the wood floor under dinette area. Wish I had known during the trip. On the other had, probably best I didn't. The fumes probably didn't help the clear thinking.

I do believe you need a master cylinder. Pretty easy to find. Keep it topped up if you don't replace it on the road. You might be able to bleed the new master cylinder on the bench, put it on, and get decent brakes without bleeding the whole system. But I'm not the expert on this, though gravity bleeding over a couple of hours did help me once. Open the bleeder, put hose on it into a jar, wait. Good luck. I would probably try to drive, but would check that master cylinder level religiously as I drove. Buy a quart of fluid.

You can get a replacement master cylinder at AutoZone. Be careful if you do as the 1978 is different from earlier GMC models Specifically look at the size of the holes where the lines screw into the master cylinder. On an 1978 they are reversed as compared to earlier models. Be sure to bench bleed it before installing it.

I have also seen where those master cylinders look like they are leaking at the back and all that is wrong is the cover gasket leaking. The master cylinder is not level so the fluid from the reservoir leaks out the back.

You can get a cover gasket at AutoZone or NAPA. Look for the HELP brand. It should be hanging on the HELP section peg board. It will take 5 minutes and no tools to replace it.
