Hello my friends!

I am installing a hot water heater into SOB with fiberglass walls for a friend and have a question about sealing the hot water heater to the wall. Is the best practice to use a tape like Camco's 25013 Universal Vent Installation Kit between the heater and fiberglass and clear silicon caulk around the joint to finish the job?

Thanks in advance

Todd

Most OEM WH installations [at least back in the day] used putty tape around the rim. That part doesn't see much heat. There were a couple I remember that had urathane spray foam around the cut out that made it a bear to get them out.

Not sure what is in the Camco kit. If it is butyl tape it will work. If the fiberglass is convoluted, cut small strips of the tape and place at the low points and then a continious strip all around or you will have gaps at the low points. Make sure the areas are clean on both sides. Trim the excess with a wood or plastic dowel about 1/2" cut at an angle

I would not use silicone as it creates problems later and doesnt hold up that well. Ill let someone else chime in with what is currently available and popular. I have been using Vulkem recently but I have a black coach.

Hope this helps.
