[GMCnet] Lithium Batteries and your Honda 2000 [message #296579] |

Andy, Why did you choose Lithium batteries? I am really confused by the
mixed information around them. There has been discussion around them
here...they seem like a really effective battery, but there is a lot of
concern about their safety. Why and what did you choose in the way of size
and brand and any other thoughts you have around them? And your Honda
inverter style generator...is it loud? Why did you go with the 2000
instead of a larger output? (our Onan seems really loud to me). And does
that mean that the inverter is on the generator, or separate? thanks!

I didn't actually weigh any of it, but:
- The two factory AC units where considerably heavier than the Coleman
Mach Power savers I installed.
- One of my single AC units was holding temp in ~90F, perhaps remove one
AC unit if you have the dual setup.
- Ditch the 6KW generator. I've run one AC unit off a Honda 2000 inverter
style.
- Convert to Lithium batteries.
- Drink Tequila instead of Beer, save a ton of weight, HA HA HA.
Just guessing, but that might save 400lbs.

Most of the time, you could just remove all the extra alternarors,
starters, axle shafrs, cv joints, spare tires, etc and lighten up your
coach. Just carry a credit card and a cell phone and good towing insurance.
Lots lighter.

Sorry, the weight savings post was poorly written on my part. I did convert to Coleman Mach power savers, which were definitely much lighter, but I didn't weigh either of them during the swap out.
I've not converted my generator setup yet, but I've used a loaner Honda 2000 inverter (yes, inverter is built into the generator setup) and successfully powered one AC unit without shore power. The Honda is MUCH MUCH MUCH quieter than the Onan. But, it's not an apples to apples comparison as the Onan is right under the bed and the Honda was 20' way plugged into the shore power pig-tail. The Onan is a very heavy unit, probably darn near 400lbs where the Honda is probably 70lbs.
As for the lithium battery, that was just an example of were weight could be saved, I've not done it. Lithium batteries have a much higher weight to density ratio, but are not as forgiving as good-ole lead acid that been around for 140 years or so. Lithium takes special charging and dis-charging electronics, still are very expensive, and can burn and/or explode if not utilized properly.
Also note, even though I ran my AC with the Honda, there isn't much power left, I just wanted to see if it was capable of starting the AC and running Ok for comparison purposes. If all you wanted to do was keep the batteries charged, run your interior lights etc, the Honda is the perfect choice cause they can produce 120v idled down under light load, and are even quieter.

I can run both roof a/c's on my Honda 6500 inverter, but only in standard mode, Eco throttle mode will not handle the second unit starting. Perhaps a soft start on my 13k but duotherms, would prevent this. But I was able to wire the factory onan interior start stop switch to the Honda....only the LED doesn't work because of reverse polarity to the switch. It's super quiet, and sips fuel....unfortunately it would probably take 10 years of fuel savings to pay for a used eu6500is. Lithium would have a long payback, but we need to embrace the technology..we are installing a few million $ worth for frequency correction lithium batteries on some trains in PA using regeneterative braking to charge them. Hopefully the prices come down soon.

The other virtue of lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4) (one sort of lithium
chemistry, not the kind in your laptop or phone) is greater usable charge.
500 amp hours weighs lest than with lead acid, and you can routinely use
80% of it, with lead acid, you wouldn't want to use more than 50% except on
rare occasions, and most days you wouldn't want to user more than 25%, if
you want to get 7 or more years of life. So, might be good if you full
time.
